, J . . . . .'■' ■ ' j PATEA PLUNKET SOCIETY. . 1 • ' 1 YEAR’S ..ACTIVITIES •;REVIEWED. The annual reports .of the Patea branch'of theJ’lunkct Society, together with the balance-sheet and reports from sub-branches, are as follow:— ; The committee has pleasure, in placing- on record another, year of steady expansion,” states the. Patea branch report. “Our thanks and-appreciation are due to Nurse -Hornell' for her loyal and conscientious work, and for zealously carrying, out her duties., !•’ February still another sub-committee was set up.' at the southern boundary, where the nurse and a. small committee are striving to uphold the aims and objects of the society. The Alton-Hur-; leyville sub-branch has. done remarkably well financially andun't 1 ' increase of visits to the room. Waverley, although a sub-branch of Patea, almost equals the branch in attendances at the rooms, and the work progresses well in this district. ‘‘The Kakaramea sub-branch, committee decided it would be better > to-work

as a. sub-committee, as. they were only four miles from Patea and the attendances ■at the rooms did not warrant a weekly visit-by the nurse. The society is again deeply indebted to the •executor of the Hunter Shaw estate (Mr.'E. F. Warren) for a donation of £5O . towards the" furnishing fund, and for-a further amount of £lO, part of the cost of the lattice fence which has formed a little private back garden outside the nurse’s quarters. Without this financial assistance a special appeal to •the public would have; been necessary. ’ “The Hunter Shaw Memorial building, of which the Plunket rooms form a part, wds officially opened by. the Hon. A. J. . Stallworthy, Minister, of Health, on/December 11, 1930.. In August the committee arranged a surprise pantry tea' for the, nurse, when her shelves became well stocked. In May the president entertained the incoming committee at an “at; home,’’ when the opportunity was taken to farewell Mrs. George King, a. vice-president. “The. nurse. is doing her utmost to encourage mothers to bring the older '.children to see, her, and it is hoped more •mothers will take the opportunity thus offered for their guidance. “The Plunket committee co-operated •with the'Mayoress as a. women’s subcommittee for the relief of refugees from the earthquake area, and did useful work collecting and distributing clothes.”' ‘ ... ■ ■ .

The large swamp which lies to the westward of the Patea Domain is being cleared of raupo and thoroughly drained by relief workers under the direction of the Patea Domain Board. When reclaimed the area will be used as a sports ground, for which it is. ideally

situated, being almost entirely encircled by low hills which will provide accommodation for hundreds of spectators. The area will also be sheltered by the new shelter belt planted last:year. ■ The housing shortage in Patea still .remains' acute, the demand for houses being out of all proportion to the supply. There has not ‘been an- empty house for several years. Mai.., houses are occupied by more than orb family.
