TARANAKI HUNT CLUB

“KENNELS” FARM TO BE SOLD. PREPARATION FOR HUNT FIXTURE At a general meeting of the Taranaki Hunt Club last night authority was given to the committee to dispose, of the “Kennels” property to th» second mortgagee. Mr. A. It. Standish presided over an attendance of 14 members. ■ . ' In case of satisfactory terms not being arranged with the second mortgagee authority was given for the committee to dispose of the property at such terms as they considered best. The chairman reported th. receipts of the point-to-point meeting at approximately £22 and a good profit was shown for the gathering. '' • ■ ■ ■ • Regarding the annual race meeting in August, evidence was shown that all favoured holding the meeting in spite of the financial conditions. Mr. L. A. Nolan said the club would have to study every means of making a profit out of the meeting. ft was shown that The hunters’ races were poor from. a speculative point of view. - The weakest of the hunters’ races was the hurdle event, and it was suggested that this race be deleted if permission could be obtained from th® Racing Conference. It was finally decided to recommend to the programme, committee that the stakes remain the same as last year, but that an application be made to delete the hurdle race .and substitute a flat race. - Mr. Halcombe considered the personal fcelingts of the members in their wish to cater more for. .gentlemen riders ■would have to be overlooked under the present conditions.' Unless the meeting wfi.s a success the members would have to put their hands in their pockets to • ‘ square accounts, he said. The motion of Mr. S'. Topless that the conditions, for the.. Maiden Hunters’ Steeplechase 'be with au list minimum was defeated on the chairman’s casting vote. , * > . '

The chairman stated the proposed stakes were;—Hunters’- Hurdles £6O, Opunake Scurry £5O, Hunters’ Steeples £5O, Waihi Hack ■ Handicap £6O. Hunt Club Cup £lOO, Stratford Open Handicap £75, Hunters’ Flat £5O, Urenui Ha6k Handicap £6o,'a total of £505. This represented a drop of £325 on lost year. Several members considered the cuts were too drastic.“What kind of a totalisator turnover do you expect in August?” asked Mr. Nolan. Last year the totalisator turnover had reached £10,494 and the gates £266. .The profit from the meeting had been only £225. This year the totalisator returns would drop considerably, hs believed.

It was suggested that the funeral of Sir Maui Pomare had interfered with the attendance last year. • >' The meeting recommended that the stakes be altered to Hunters’ Hurdles £6O, Opunake Scurry £75, Hunters Steeples £6O, Waihi Hack ' Handicap £B5, Hunt Cup £125, Stratford Handicap £9O, Hunters’ Flat £6O, and Urenui Hack Handicap £75, a total of £630. It was recommend that the two-year-old parade be held after the third race. Last year it was held after the sixth race.

It was resolved that the hunt at Mr. <T. Cole’s, which was postponed last Saturday '-n account of the wet weather, would be held on Saturday to enable the townspeople to view the hunt over the snlendidlv situated properties.
