CRACKS IN CHIMNEY STACK

CONCERN OF THE HOSPITAL BOARD RESULT OF RECENT EARTHQUAKE The state of the chimney stack at the Hawera Hospital has been causing th© board some concern, and an inspection is to be made by an officer of the Department of Health. An inspection of cracks caused ‘by various earthquakes has already been made by a local expert, whose report was before the board yesterday. The secretary reported writing to the department asking for. the department’s engineer to inspect urgently the chimney ctack, which had been seriously affected by the Murchison and subsequent earthquakes- Local opinion was that another severe shock would cause the stack to fall unless immediate attention was given to repairs. .

Mr. C. Dahl reported thq,t,op the west side . of the /stack,, there .were serious cracks from 13 feet and upwards, and on the east side a crack in the base only. The stack was not absolutely dangerous as it was, but it would not remain so for many years as the cracks were sure to grow- bigger. Water, heat and. soot would do its work in weakening the brickwork, and this might be dangerous even in small shakes. . He suggested that the stack be supported, with an iron construction Q nd the cracks filled with mortar. The Department of Health wrote stating that the engineer would make his inspection and report at the earliest opportunity. HAWERA GOLF CLUB. MEDAL ROUND CARDS.
