EVACUATION OF LONELY ISLE
NO ACTION ON TRISTAN DA CUNHA
British Official Wireless. Rec. 5.5 p.m. Rugby, June 9. A question was asked in the House to-day whether the Government would consider evacuating the lonely island of Tristan da Cunha in. view of the cost of providing the inhabitants with the necessaries of life and the fact that the island is of no commercial or strategic value. . The Under-Secretary for the Colonies said the question had been considered from time to time but owing to the opposition of the islanders to their removal it had not been thought desirable to take any action. He added that the charge on the public funds was confined to the provision of occasional steamer calls to carry mails and .supplies which were paid for by private subscription. . . Tristan da Cunha is the chief island of a group of volcanic origin in midAtlantic about the latitude of Cape Town. The population is 127. Ono of the group has an extensive deposit ot guano.
