POPULATION OF HASTINGS

CENSUS SHOWS INCREASES

QUARTER MORE THAN IN 1926.

NAPIER EXERCISED ITS VETO.

By Telegraph.—Press Association.

Hastings, Judo 9.

The Hastings Borough census, completed this morning, shows a population of 12,713, including Maoris, ail increase of 2565 over .1926, or a percentage increase of 25,27, as against 12.68 in the previous, inter-censal period. The census was recommended by the Government to Hastings and Napier with the apparent purpose of finding out the effects of the earthquake on population movements. _ Napier exercised its option against taking a census. The population of that town is much in doubt, but it is commonly believed to be very adversely affected by the earthquake. The greatest change in Hastings has been an increase of 21 per cent, in males, who increased from 2535 to 4218, and an increase of 48,78 per cent, in male minors, who increased by 299. Female adults increased from 3085 to 3775, an increase of 22.36 per cent. Maoris living in the borough at last census numbered 59, but were not scpaiatcly counted this year.
