DEATH IN MOTOR SMASH

CHARGE OF INTOXICATION LAID

By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, June 9. A tfr.otor smash in Kingsland at midnight caused the death of one man and other men. The dead man is Hany Merritt Parker, aged 35, a manager, and the injured are Mrs. Parker and Clifford and N. Cooper, who were all sent to hospital with head wounds. Their condition is fairly serious. The driver, Cvrus Lawson Smith, aged 57, escaped injury, and a sixth person received minor injuries. The car failed to take a turn and crashed into a telegraph post, which was knocked out of alignment and cracked through. The car was wrecked. Parker and his wife came to Auckland recently from Sydney to open a branch of the firm of which Smith is the Sydney representative. _ Smith, a native of the United States, appeared in the Police Court charged with being intoxicated while in charge of a car, driving without a license and causing the death of Parker by negligent driving. He was remanded to appear on June 16. Bail was fixed at £5OO.
