ILLEGAL BRAND ON BUTTER

LANDING OF SHIPMENT STOPPED.

MATAKANA COMPANY’S POSITION.

By Telegraph.—Press Association.

Whangarei, June 9. The Matakana Dairy Co., which has used the word “British” on its butter boxes for the past 30 years, has received notice from the Dairy Board and. its London principals that the brand is a contravention of the Merchant Marks Act and that the landing of a consignment of 1270 boxes aboard the Tainui has been prohibited. The action has been taken under the Act of 1887, which says that the description “British” is legally applicable only to goods manufactured in Britain.
