DECLINE IN BETTING

TOTALISATOR RETURNS. DECREASE OF 19 PER CENT. A decline of slightly over 19 per cent, is shown in the totalisator receipts at racing and trotting meetings in the Auckland Province for the season now drawing to a close. There is a total decrease in the betting to date of £428,917, compared with the lull 1929-30 season, but the Auckland Trotting Club’s winter meeting has yet to bo held, and should reduce this decrease by at least £50,000. ? , The total sum invested to date at meeting throughout the province .is £1,809,420 10s, compared with £2,238,337 10s during tho whole of the 1929-30 season. Compared with the 1928-29 season the investments show a decrease of £517,465, and with the season previous to that a decrease of £922,045 10s. Racing, as distinct from trotting, was again responsible for by far the greater part of tho season’s betting, totalisator investments in that direction amounting to £1 400 047, of which amount the city clubs’accounted for £950,743. There was a marked decline in betting at racing club meetings, investments at all clubs falling off by just over £337,000, compared with the previous season. Country clubs, with total investments of t 449,304, suffered a decline of £161,244, The falling Off in the total investments at trotting meetings, which totalled £409 373 10s, was £91,597, as against a decrease in the previous season of 171,19'L n , , , n At the four meetings conducted by the Auckland Racing Club at Ellerslie this season, £601,355 10s was handled by the totalisator, a decrease of £199,a6b on tho figure for 1929-30 and a decrease of £181,679 ou the 1928-29 season. An important feature of the year was tho move toward cheaper betting by several of the smaller chibs by the adoption of the 5s totalisator and the issue of 10s tickets on the lawn at Eljerslie. Another notable event was the amalgamation of the interests of the Otahuliu Trotting Club with the Auckland Trotting Club.
