IMPROVED NEEDLEWORK

COMPETITIVE CLASSES AT SHOW. Referring to the needlework, the judge, Mrs. Blackley, said there was a great improvement on last year’s section. The outstanding exhibit was a handbag by Miss M. Robertson. The woollen rug class was good, but perhaps the-greatest difficulty in discriminating between the exhibits was found in the apron class, which was very good. The judge expressed herself as satisfied on the whole with the children’s classes and for the help of the children she left a little note of constructive criticism on the back of each exhibit. The fretwork section was a great improvement on last year’s, both in workmanship and design, said the judge, Mr. G. H. Gorringe. The women’s class was especially pleasing. The bases of design of the pieces frequently showed New Zealand tendencies. The complete working models in the model section showed good craftsmanship, said one of the judges, Mr. H. H. ■Skelton. It was diflic to discriminate between the first three models of-sea craft, all of which were ingenious. The meccano models were mostly constructed from ordinary designs, although one or two of the makers had displayed considerable originality of ideas.
