LITTLE CHANGE IN CAR DESIGN. i • No sweeping changes in design but greater attention to comfort and finish will be found in the display of nearly fifty cars and cycles in the motor Olympia attached to the' New Plymouth Winter Show. Two new cars are the Hillman eight and the Rover, but in every make of car on exhibition improvement will be noted in some detail or other, arid in many cases the price will probably be found to have come more within the reach of the buyer of average means. Six-cylinder engines are most numerous, but fours and eights are still to be found. There is a tendency towards greater, comfort and more room inside practically every model, but the principal type of ear shown illustrates the strength of the public demand for cars of light construction, with consequent low petrol* consumption and. ning.cost. There is evidence of British makers making a strenuous effort to meet the colonial market by the production of cars suitable to New Zealand needs both in construction and in price, but the fast is also apparent, that the Ame- . rican. manufacturers are endeavouring.to face the new competition. The result is a better bargain than before for every buyer. Members of the motor trade characterise 1931 as a buyer’s year, and it will be found that as far as possible a genuine attempt has been made notto pass on to the public the increased duties that have been imposed recently on the importation of motor-cars. That now is the time to buy if one has the means will be apparent to every visitor to the motor show.
