DIMINISHED LABOUR VOTE
ELECTIONS IN VICTORIA LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL SEATS HEALTH MINISTER BEATEN NATIONAL FINANCE ISSUE - By Telegraph—Press Assn. —Copyright. Rec. 10.30 p.m. Melbourne, June 8. Contests for nine seats in the Victorian Legislative Council were held on Saturday, the occasion being the triennial election. It is now known that they resulted in the return of fi'e retiring members and four new ones. The outstanding feature of the election was the diminished Labour vote and the overwhelming defeat of Mr. W. J. Beckett, Labour Minister of Health, by Mr. Herbert Olney, a United Australia Party candidate.
The compaign was conducted entirely oh the issues of national finance. Mr. Beckett was the only Labour candidate defeated.
