DAIRY PRODUCE DISPLAY

WINTER SHOW AT NEW PLYMOUTH

AWARDS MADE BY THE JUDGES

NO DECLINE SHOWN IN ENTRIES

AS is only right in view of the prominent part that it has played in the progress and prosperity of the Dominion as a whole and of North Taranaki in particular, the dairy produce entries.have been given a prominent position in the mam produce hall at tl c Plymouth Winter Show. Entries are well up to the average in number though showing a decline on last year when owing to it heino* the special 21st anniversary show a special effort was made. Th view of the controversy that has taken place of late on the quality olproXe, no doubt the cheese exhibits will be closely criticised by all interested in the dairying industry.

• Owing to the fact that each entry now comprises only one crate of cheese instead of two and in most cases only o£ of 561bs the display docs not cover as much space as iormeily, Put it is none the less Jompreliensivc, and should impress even on the most casual observer the importance of the dairy industry to bot town and country.

COMMENTS BY JUDGES BUTTER WELL UP TO STANDARD. SOME HARSHNESS IK CHEESE. The judging, as usual, was done by the members of the staff of the Dairy Division, who gave to it meticulous care. , „ “Entries in the butter classes, remarked the judges, “although not so numerous as last year, were, insofar as quality was concerned, quite equal to those of past years. Flavour with few exceptions was good, while 'body, salting arid 'finish in the vast majority of instances left nothing to be desired. Coni sidering that all butter has been in cool store for a lengthy period the resultant quality has, on the whole, proved very ■satisfactory. A few managers have again made the mistake of not using a box of the proper dimensions, thus ■spoiling the good effect when the boxes are staged.” Commenting on the cheese the judges remarked: “The exhibits, while not so numerous as last year, are of fair average quality. The winning entries'showed nice silky body but were not all of the desired.degree of closeness. . A number of the other entries, were inclined to harshness, a fault that makers should •guard against;, while the texture in some was more, or less oppn. '.t he finis i of the majority was good, although a few had not received the necessary attention .. After viewing these exhibits the judges are'of the opinion that some Snakerfi have bceq , influenced Jby the ■numerous comments regarding the overmoist .condition of our export cheese, and would ask those concerned to steer a medium course between the extremes of excess moisture and lack of moisture. Some New Zealand cheese has been con-. demned in the past owing to high water content, .and makers should guard against allowing the pendulum to swing too far in the other direction.’ In butter classes the Lepperton Dairy Company (Mr. A. G. Drake, manager) scored heavily, securing first in tne pats for local trade competition, ..first for box of export creamery butter, plus average grade, thus annexing for the third time and winning outright Uie Commonwealth and Dominion Line Ltd s cup, which has been open, for competition since 1924. Lcppcrton also secured two other seconds and annexed the points trophy. United (Mr. J. Swede), was also very successful, winning the Joseph Nathan and Co. 50-guinca cup competition and gaining its third leg therein; also first in butter from cream removed from milk for standardising, and first in the assistants class (Mi. W. Jones). Eltham (Mr. E. H. Burgess) again for the second year annexed the Taranaki Agricultural Society’s champion cup valued at £'-■) toi creamery butter, also gaining second in the points prize. Mangorei .(Mr..J. Guild) won the novice class. Levin (Mr. J. Smellie), which has scored so heavily at the New Plymouth show during the past few years, did not get among the prize-winners this year. Among the clieese factories the most successful was Rua Roa (Mr. N. <L Terry). This factory, which is located in the Dannevirke district, secured three firsts, including the Mac Ewan salt trophy, and the white cheddar cheese class, getting its first “leg” in the Shaw, Savill and Albion £25 cup, and the Taranaki Metropolitan Society’s white or coloured cliecsb for local trade, as well as the points prize. Royal Oak, (Mr. H. H. Finn) again annexed the Taranaki championship for the second successive year, also (Mr. J. Abraham) the assistants’ class. Westmere (U. Dickinson) won tire coloured cheddar for export class. Pahiatua (Mr. L. J. Heayns, took the open class in white or coloured cheddar for export, whilst Pembroke (Mr. E. W. Baker) was first in three loaf cheese. There was again noticeable, as was the case last year, lack of uniformity in the boxes used for the 281 b of butter exhibit. Boxes of all shapes and sizes were used, making it exceedingly difficult for the stewards to arrange the exhibit attractively. The adoption of a uniform standard package would certainly effect an improvement. COMPETITION IN BUTTER LEPPERTON WINS POINTS PRIZE. ELTHAM TARANAKI CHAMPION.
