ODDFELLOWS LODGE MEETING.

GENERAL AND PERSONAL.

The quarterly meeting of the Kaponga branch of the M.U.1.0.0.F was held in the Oddfellows’ Hall on Monday, N.G., Bro. A. H. Burt presiding. The election of officers resulted: G.M., Bro. A. H. Hurt; N.G., Bro. A. G. Gilbert; B. G., Sister Muriel Evans; RSNG, Bro. L. Heydon; LSNG, Bro. C. Gilbert; RSVG, Bro. L. Brewer; LSVG, Bro. R. Gwyn; warden, Bro. C. Harding; guardian, Bro. C. W. N. Rowe; elective secretary, Bro. E. W. Snowden; secretary, Bro. A. Melville; L.M., Bro. W. Marr. The second annual ritual competitions were held, the district secretary, Bro. N. B. Bellringer, New Plymouth, and P.G., Bro. W. Marr being examiners. The monthly meeting of the Kaponga Volunteer Fire Brigade was held on Tuesday, Superintendent A. Melville presiding over a good attendance. The superintendent stated that work was proceeding apace with the conversion of the new fire engine and.it was expected that it would be ready for the road in about three weeks.

A grand dance under the auspices of the Kaponga and Eltham troop°-~Qf the Legion of Frontiersmen was held the Kaponga Town Hall on Thursday. The night was extremely boisterous but despite this there was a very fair attendance. There were frontiersmen from Hawera and Eltham, including Captain Vickridge, Hawera, and Lieutenant Darling, Eltham. . The floor was in excellent order and intriguing music was played by Sait’s orchestra. Supper was served by a committee consisting of Mesdames Carrington, Albon, Brewer, Tait, Gilbert, Scott, Dagg and Bentley, and Miss M. Guy. The interchange of visits between the Eltham and Kaponga troops is to be advanced at an early date when a combined dance will be held at Eltham.

A troop of the Legion of Frontiersmen was recently formed in Kaponga at a meeting which was well attended, inchiding frontiersmen from Hawera and Eltham. After the business supper was served and a pleasant social hour or two spent. The troop has commemjed practice in readiness for the competitions which are to be conducted by the troops of the Taranaki squadron. Mr. H. Perrin, Nelson, is on a holiday visit to Kaponga and is the guest of his sister-in-law, Mrs. L. A. Wells, Manala Road.

Mr. W. J. A. Farnell, headmaster or the Kaponga State School, after spending some weeks in hospital. He is recuperating satisfactorily but it will be some time before he will be able to resume his duties at the school. One of the heaviest hail storms experienced in the district for some time occurred on Friday morning early. The hailstones were large and a coating several inches deep lay on the ground for a considerable period. Road conditions for factory traffic were most difficult but relief was given by the town board foreman, who brought the fire hose into use to wash the slush from the dangerous street crossing. The third of the winter ‘series, of euchre tournaments under the auspices of St. Mark’s Anglican Church was held on Tuesday. There was a very good attendance and play was of an interesting nature. Prizes for the evening were donated by Mrs. E B. Tait, Mrs. G. J. Lewis and Mr. B. Cleland. They were won as follow: Men’s, Mr. Cliff Tait; men’s hidden number, Mr. J. Harper: ladies; Mrs. I. E. Evans; and ladies hidden number, Mrs. Jones.
