GOETHE CENTENARY

VIENNA PLANS FOR NEXT YEAR.

On Marell 22, 1932, it will be 100 years since Goethe died, and already three Vienna theatres are preparing quite a number of Goethe productions for the occasion.

Tho Burgtheater intends to perform both the first and second parts of “Faust,” though the latter is specially difficult to stage. In the following autumn the distoric drama, “Gotz of Berlichingen with the Iron list,” will follow, and in the winter the two classical dramas, “Tasso” and “Iphigenia.” At the Deutsches Volkstheater “Faust” is to be played in the modernised ami curtailed version by Mederow, to be followed by a. new “Clavigo,” and possibly a new production of “The Natural Daughter.” Further, a cycle of Goethe’s one-act and other little plays is contemplated by that theatre: they are produced in Vienna only on rare occasions. Matinees are to be given, when scenes from the plays and parts from the narrative works of Goethe will be read. The Vienna Goethe Museum, under the direction ot Dr. Rudolf PayerThurn, is preparing an exhibition of Goethe's documents, letters, pictures, etc. Letters of critics will be shown, one of which advises Goethe to cease writing, whiL another calls him a “burnt-out Vesuvius.” A memorial tablet is to be placed on a house in the Inner Stadt, where Ottilie Goethe, his daughter-in-law, lived. It is al*o intended to award “Goethe prizes” to gifted, but poor, authors.
