SUCCESS AS SALESMAN.

WORK IN SOUTH AMERICA.

London, April 17.

Mr. Charles Holloway, of Saltash, Cornwall, the new president of the National Union of Commercial Travellers, in his presidential address to the annual conference of the union at New-castle-on-Tyne, said that the members would pay no heed to the croakers who were fearful that British trade was sick beyond recovery. Referring to a cablegram sent by the union to the Prince of Wales in South America, Mr. Holloway said: “I live in the Duchy of Cornwall, and if his Royal Highness turns out to be as good a commercial traveller as he is a landlord, his •success is assured, and he, will have deserved well of his firm, British Commonwealth, Ltd. “We live in an age of rapid change, and not least is that governing the dress of the commercial-, traveller,” Mr. Holloway added. “The top hat and the frock coat, as the sign manual of our calling, are gone for ever. The saloon car has made the umbrella almost a rarity; the übiquitous spat is largely giving way to plus fours. Last summer it was reported that commercial travellers had been observed going about their business in shorts and open shirts. ■ The value of newspaper advertising was emphasised by many delegates when the conference decidexl that the executive council should make a rule to advertise frequently and regularly in order to bring the aims and'benefits of the union before commercial travellers.
