MAORIS AND EMPIRE DAY
QUEEN VICTORIA’S MEMORY. ■ The Maoris’ remembrance of Queen Victoria was exemplified on Empire Day when a wreath was placed at the foot of the statue of the late Queen in Albert Park, Auckland, by Mrs- Rewa; Bennett, of. Parnell, representing ’’the Akarana Maori Association. The .wreath was wholly representative of New Zealand. It included the foliage of kauri, - totara and karamu trees and several varieties of ferns. An inscription revealing the esteem in which Queen • Victoria was held among the Maoris was attached. A similar wreath was placed’at the foot of the memorial to, the Imperial and colonial servicemen and friendly Maoris who fell in the Maori wars, at the .junction of Symonds and Wakefield Streets.
