DROP IN MOUNTAIN TOLLS

FINANCIAL DEPRESSION BLAMED.

SOME COMPARATIVE FIGURES.

“It will be noticed that our toll fees of £6BB 13s show a drop of £l7l 12s (xl compared with the previous year, when the total fees collected amounted to £B6O 5s 6d,” stated Mr. W. G. Walkley, chairman of the South Committee of the Egmont National Park Board yesterday. “In the first four months of the financial year toll fees were considerably greater in amount than the fees for the corresponding four months of the previous year. Thereafter they commenced to fall, with the result mentioned. I think it can be safely said that the fall in fees is due entirely to the existing financial depression and is in no wise due to any decline in the popularity of the resort. It is gratifying, however, to sec that the ‘Syme Hut’ and the cottage have provided satisfactory returns and are popular with visitors staying at Dawson Falls.” The comparative statement of park fees collected for the past three years as prepared by the secretary was shown as follows.—•

The division of fees as collected last year is as follows. — April: Park, £BO 10s; cottages, £ll 17s 6d; motors, £49 7s 6d; Syme Hut, £1 0s 6d. May: Park, £2S 16s; cottages, £2 Us 6d; motors, £l9 10s; Syme Hut, June: Park, £25 2s; cottages, £l5 Ss; motors, £2O; Syme Hut, 16s. Murphy said he regretted to state that the takings were down in comparison with the previous season. Mr. Murphy mentioned the opening of the Stratford Road and its extension to the plateau as a possible cause of the reduction.

On the suggestion of the secretary, Mr, L. O. Hooker, it was decided to erect a sign by the gate at the entrance to’ the reserve setting out the toll charges and authority for collection. Another, setting out the conditions and charges for the use of Syme Hut, and a third, with a warning against the destruction of or damage to the board’s property, are also to be erected.
