GOOD QUALITY OF MATAPU CROPS

CARROTS, SWEDES AND MANGOLDS

Farmers’ root crops were judged at Matapu on Monday by Messrs. J. M. Smith and J. W. Palmer, Department of Agriculture. The . judges commented favourably on/the state of the crope and the general freedom, from disease. The carrots were remarkable for quality and weight, Mr. H. Hoskin’s crop being one of the best seen in the district, while Messrs. Hooker’s and Seed’s were very good, The swedes were very good and clean, the leading crops of' Messrs. Ron Guy, L. J. Rowe and W. A. Guy being excellent. The general average wag good, though in some cases they were inclined to be necky. Detailed results are:—

Mr. W. T. Seed, president of the Matapu branch of the Farmers’ Union, thanked the ladies who had provided -’ternoon tea, and Messrs. F. Hoskin, H. Sharp and W. A. Guy for giving the party luncheon. He also thanked Mr. F. R. Nicholas for the use of his shed as a meeting place. Thanks were extended to the judges by the vice-president, Mr. 0. Robertson, who spoke appreciatively of the work of the Agricultural Department, instancing the discovery of sodium chlorate’s value for killing noxious weeds. He stressed the value to farmers of personal contact with the department's officers. MANAIA GOLFERS AT PATEA. WIN FOR THE LOCAL TEAM. Representatives of the Maiaia Golf Club visited Patea on Saturday, when members of the local club defeated them by 5 games to one. The details, with Patea players first, are:—Hunger and Findlay beat Ryan and Bottler, Edwards and Hugis beat Miller and Davies. Shield and Hegarty beat Jordan and Paterson, Gilbert and' Mitchell beat Meuli and Walker. Jones and Robinson beat Glyde and Spooner, Thompson and Gleny lost to Crompton and Allison.
