ST. MARY’S SOCIAL CLUB
OPENING OF. NEW ROOM. ; I ■ The St. Mary’s Young People’s Social Club opened its winter session last night’ in the newly acquired club room. The gathering was attended by senior as well as junior parishioners, bridge occupying the former and competitions and dancing the latter. Miss, Eileen Horner and Miss Jessie Home contributed vocal solos.
The vicar, Canon E. H. Strong, before declaring the session open, said it was pleasing to see so many senior parishioners present at the first gathering in the new room. The club had now been in operation for three years. This year it was possible further to develop its activities now that there was a permanent club room. Fortunately it-had been possible’to obtain the room in the parish building without disturbing the private school conducted by Mrs. Stafford, Thanks to the energy of the Rev. -F. Fordham Clark and those associated with him a beginning had been madq with the furnishing of the room. On behalf of the older parishioners Mr. W. H. Skinner complimented Mr. Fordham Clark, Miss, Broad and the others concerned on having placed the dub on such a businesslike footing. Thjs was the first time in his experience that there had been such a club in the parish. It was an undertaking that held promise of development, and he wished the club every success. The new room is being gradually fitted with club facilities. There is a pingpong table, but it is hoped to add a billiard table later. The present ar-, rangement is that the room will be open on two nights a week for men and one night a week for women, with a dance, once a month.. The club is divided into two sections, that for men under' the leadership of Mr. Fordham Chirk and Messrs. B. Hirst and J., Kenny, and that for .women controlled by the Misses Broad, Janies and Smith. Music for the dances last night was provided by the Misses Whitehead and Broad, Canon Strong and Mr. B. Hirst.
