FARMERS’ UNION MEETING.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) A meeting of the Mangatoki branch of the Farmers’ Union was held on Monday evening. Mr. W. E. Carter presided over a small attendance. A motion of sympathy with Mrs. W. Lambie and family was carried in silence. The late Mr. Lambie was at one time a prominent member of the branch.

The president referred to the illness of Mr. Jacob Marx, father of the honorary secretary and wishes were expressed for a speedy recovery. Mr. Marx recently underwent an operation for appendicitis in the New Plymouth hospital. A welcome was extended to Mr. Anderson, a new member. The correspondence included a circular from the W .E.A. inviting the formation of a group for instruction and study of New Zealand problems, applicable to farmers.. A comprehensive syllabus was outlined and individual essays were invited from group members. Action was deferred. Remits submitted for presentation to the conference of delegates from South Taranaki branches were fully discussed, and the following ones passed for submission:— That a determined stand be taken against any attempt to lift the ban on the importation of cattle from countries infected with the foot-and-mouth disease. That the Government be urged’ to cease the construction of branch railway lines which are not likely to prove productive and which would ultimately prove a further burden on the taxpayers.

The the Government prohibit the exportation of any cheese other than fulcream cheese. That Sanners’ milk lorries be exempted from heavy-motor traffic fees. That in view of the present financial position of the farmers, local bodies be urged to restrict work and substantially reduce the rates for the coming year. The balance-sheet for last season’s euchre tournaments was presented. A credit of £3 18s Id was disclosed. The main items were door receipts £2l 4s, donations £5 14s, prizes £l4 17s 7d, hall rental £3 7s 6d, playing cards 15s. A very successful season was reported, the attendances being excellent. The question of running the euchre evenings again , this winter was defeired for consideration at the annual meeting to be held very soon. A lengthy discussion on the Control Board controversy ended without any decision being arrived at. There was a good muster of ladies at. the Red Cross instruction class on Monday evening. Good progress is being maintained under the tuition of Sister Ingles.
