WHANGAREI WHISPERS

TO-DAY’S FIELDS REVIEWED UNUSUALLY GOOD CLASS CARDED. EAGLET WILL Bfc PUBLIC CHOICE. BEST ' SPRINTER IS PAGANELLI. ■ Unusually strong fields are engaged lor the Whangarci meeting, which opens on the Kensington racecourse today and concludes oh Saturday, and consequently wider interest will 'be taken in the gathering. Eaglet is topweight in .the ten-furlong event and another high-class performer in Pagahelli heads the list, in the sprint. British King, Alpina, Vandyke and Raillight are other recent winners and the public should have a wealth of form to go byThe meeting opens witli the AUTUMN TRIAL STAKES. ' Of 100 sovs. Five fui-longs. Art Gallery Bronze Tray British Princess Catchcm Diamond Maid Clontarf Bill Lady Naiica Gold Sceptre Merry Lu Marechai Silene Tractor Valeria Scotland Yard Wee Betty Wliakapara Wild Country "Wishbone Batman Merry Lu ran a close second to Cahip Princess at Te Rapa, being beaten jonly in the last few strides. Over a furldiig shorter to-day she is certain to be a tough proposition to head off. Wee Betty ran well at her last outing and Bronze Tray was second to Taitrua at Avondale and that form was good. However, the distance may be, a trifle short for him. Marechai and Praetor were backed and beaten at Te Rapa, while Wliakapara is considered a likely sort. However, MERRY LU should be the elect of the majority.

■PORTLAND HACK HANDICAP. Of 120 sows. 'Six furlongs.

Good Idea ran a solid fourth to Rafflight at Te Rapii ami will find this company much weaker. He seems to like this cotirSe and wOii a double at Whahgarei in the spring. Holly Holm ran two good thirds at Te Rapil and is sure to be in demand, while Rangikaha showed up against good class horses recently. Oil form it looks as if HOLLY HOLM and Gbod Ideh will be the favourites;

The-big event is tllb

McTNNES MEMORIAL.

Of 275 sttvs aiid Gohl Cup valued at £25. One and a quarter miles.

. Eaglet won attractively at. Ellerslie and Avondale and was very Unlucky to be beaten at To Rapa; It looks as if the Chief Ruler mare is right back to her best fbriii arid 9.2 will not worry her to-day, especially if the goilig is inclined to be easy. Sir Mond registered an attractive win at Ellerslie, But his subsequent form at Avondale was not quite so good. However, he is an honest customer and his loss of form may be only temporary. Maori Boy will not Have many friends unless the going is very heavy, and Grdhd Tea has yet to show that he can' find this distance. Taneriri was a useful performer last winter, but he has hot done much recent racing arid may be seen in better light later on. Brampton does not represent good class, but, nevertheless, ■he runs on well and is sure to be handy at the finish. Spring Abbey Gay Idda appear td be oUt of their class, but Clopton and Grand Spirit cannot be denied outside chances; The latter ran a good race in the Great Northern Oaks. On paper, it would appear as if the most difficult to head off would be EAGLET; Taneriri and Clopton. NORTHLAND HACK HURDLES. Of 140 sovs. One and a half miles and 197 yards.

Glena Bay 11 H Owaltaka 9 3 Archeen In 10 Uand Measure 9 0 Foxhound 910 . Maunga King 9 0

Glena Bay has not started for a while and in the past he has required a fair amourit of racing to bring him into form. The locally-trained Archeen has kon on this course and is well treated; ■but he does not make as much appbal as Foxhound, who ran a good second to Star Comet across country at Easter. The remainder do not make much appeal and it looks as if most confidence will be placed in FOXHOUND and Archeen.

The second ‘Teg” of the double is the

STEWARDS’ HANDICAP. Of 175 srivs. Six furloiigs.

Paganelli has lost Caste to some extent this season, but he would need only to be half ready to make light of his 9.7 to-day. If he cannot beat this company it will be time to consider putting him over hurdles. Honitou has bled during her latest races and consequently cannot be considered with confidence. Lady’s Boy has been running some good races lately, but without luck, and his turn may come soon. British King scored attractively at Avondale and must be given a good chance, but he reads a much better proposition in the last race. Chief Joy, Hampton Park, Tradesman and BigBertha all go fast, but Tradesman should’ be the pick of this quartette. PAGANELLI, Tradesman and Lady’s Boy are a trio that appeal.

The race is for locally-owned horses and consequently stay-at-home bettors are in a fog. Frothblower runs a good seven and so do Oration, Alloy and Welcome Home, but nothing makes more appeal than the Greyspear three-year-old ALPINA, who won at Avondale. However, she is on the small

side and her greatest difficulty may be to carry the weight. MAUNGATAPERE HACK HANDICAP. Of 120 sovs. Six furlongs. Vandyke 0 5 Eseidiis 7 0 Rafflight 'J 4 Stimulant 7 0 Tambourine S 1 Diamond Maid 7 0 Hollv Holm 7 10 British Taurua 7 9 Princess 7 0 Land Measure 7 7 King .Peg 7 0 Gold Lilv 7 0 Rangikaha 7 0 Nfeil ' 70 Vandyke won impressively at le Rapa aiid, as lie had not raced for some time'pribr to that meeting, he seems certain to be improved by the race. Rafflight would be better over an extra furlong, but Holly Holm, Taurua, Land Measure and Neil all run a fair six. However, the public will probably place most confidence in RAFFLIGHT. WAI PH HANDICAP. OF 130 sovs; One mile.

The imported horse British King carried 5.5 when he won over this distance at Avondale and appears to have struck his best form. A rise of 91b. in this company should not worry him, and it looks as if he has only to start to be a hot favourite. Cloptoil is a useful performer, and Lucy Rose runs well when the sting is out of the going. Royal Ruler is said to be on the up-grade, but he does not make as much appeal as Envoy, who should. be improved by his recent racing. King Willonyx and Tetrachate must be respected, but the best form has lieeii sliowii by BRITISH KING and Envoy.

' Banbridge has run five seconds atid two thirds’ this season without. scoring a win. He is honest, but teriibly tilt lucky. ♦ ♦ * * . Arvada looked as if she needed a race when she stepped out at Stratford, and she should be one to keep in mind on a small course. * « » • Calamine nan her worst race this season at Stratford. It was nothing like her two efforts at Feilding, and the Callaghan mare may be in need of a spell. # * * * Takahue was badly handled at Stratford - and then was only narrowly beaten. Backers will remember that When he starts at Marton on Saturday. # # « # Taragona gave a pleasing display in the Rose will Hack Handicap at Tiffiarn last week, and wits in the picture until well into the straight. This brother to Paquito has yet to win a stake, but owing to a soinewliat weak constitution he has not had much racing, and like others of his breed, will probably make good with age. # # * * The St. George’s Handicap was run to suit .Seatown, but under any circiiinstances it i<s doubtful if he would have been beaten. It was apparent he had done a lot- of work and. there is no doubt he is right back to his best. He will get a big penalty in the Cornwall Handicap, but he should more than pay his way this winter.
