KAPONGA WINS AT -MANUTAHI,

OKAIAWA FIFTEEN' RUNNERS-UP. Bright football and pleasant weather conditions made the Manutahi seven-a-side Rugby football tournament yesterday an enjoyable outing. Eighteen junior teams from Patea to Stratford were competing and there were interesting games before Kaponga won the Lovell and Christmas Shield from Okaiawa in the final.

The organisation was excellent, a. big programme of matches being carried out expeditiously. Mr. M, Comerford was a capable secretary. The referees were Messrs. C. Wills, L. Hunt, J. Kiley, A. E. Spratt and W. Canning. The committee was: Messrs. J. Couch, E. Clarke, E. Johns, W. Smart, T. Gillett, F. S. Hunt, C. Wills. H. Cornwall, C. Barclay, C. and R. Harvie, W., G., M., and 11. Baldwin. Kaponga overwhelmed Hawera in the semi-final by 17 points to nil. Throwing the ball about with precision, they were continually on the attack. All their tries came from passing bouts. Playing uphill, Williams and Gargan scored tries and in the second spell R. Cuff scored twice and McCarthy once. One try was converted by R. Cuff. 1 . Final. Kaponga beat Okaiawa by .6 points to 3. The teams were: —Kaponga: G. Cuff, R. Cuff, K. Behl, G. Williams, B. Garwan, R. McCarthy and D- Walker. Okaiawa: D. Tito, C. Blair, D. Blair, T. Toro, G. Edwards, H. Jackson and R. Hooper. Kaponga played uphill ip the first spell and opened the scoring when McCarthy intercepted a short punt by Jackson and, side-stepping Hooper, Tan through from half-way. R. Cufi' missed the kick. Kaponga continued to attack strongly and C. Belli charged a defender’s kick down. He snapped up to hand on to R. Cuff, who went over near, the posts. His kick hit the upright. In the second spell Kaponga held an advantage but could not score. Near his own line Toro picked up and passed to Hooper, who got a flying start in his race for the line. McCarthy pursued him hotly but bis flying tackle, though it brought Hooper down, was too late. An additional match was played between Okaiawa and Hawera. Okaiaw’a won by 12 to nil, Tito, Hooper, Edwards and Blair scoring. In the evening a well-attended dance was held in the hall,- the visiting teams beino- the-guests of the Manutahi Club. The°pi'esident, Mi*. A. B. Muggeridge, presented the trophies.

’’ s MEN’S GOLF COMPETITION. LOW HANDICAP MEN LEAD FIELD. ’ The first men’s competition of the season to be held by 'the Hawera Golf Club was begun yesterday in dull but fine weather. Lower handicap men returned good cards and filled several of the first places. HAROLD LLOYD IN “FEET FIRST.” The same sort of thrill devices which Harold Lloyd used in “Safety Last,” his famous building-scaling film, are to be seen in “Feet First, ’ the newest Lloyd offering at the Hawera Opera House to-day at 2 p.m., to-night at 8 p.im, and finally to-morrow, “Feet First,” a Paramount release, reveals Harold as an ambitious young shoeclerk, who falls in love with his boss’ secretary. In his endeavour to impress the girl with his affluence, he takes a trip “aboard a Pacific liner, on which she and her employer’s family are passengers. The thrills come near the finale, 0 when Harold returns to the city in a mail sack, carrying an important document. “THE TEXAN” AT THE GRAND. Gary Cooper and Fay Wray, who play the leads in “The Texan,” a Paramount all-talking western, which shows at the Grand Theatre to-morrow night and Saturday night, are appearing together for the*first time since they were eofjatured in “The Legion of the Condemned.” They are supported by Emma Drnn, Oscar Apfel, James Marcus and Donald Reed. John Cromwell directed the picture.

WEDNESDAY FOOTBALL

SUCCESS OF COMPETITION. COMMITTEE'S ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the Wednesday Rugby football competition committee was held at Hawera. last night, Mr. S. Thrush presiding. The chairman stated the result of the year's play had been satisfactory. He congratulated City upon its success, also Ohangai, the runner-up. The results proved, he said, that junior football was as good in this competition as in any other part of Taranaki. There was a small credit balance. During the year Mr. A. R. Elgar had resigned from the secretaryship, the position ' being filled by Mr. H. Thrush. Unsuitable weather for Elgar Cup matches had diminished the main source of income. Unfortunately it had not been possible to arrange a match with the central division juniors. The following officers were elected: President, Mr. S. Thrush; vice-presi-dent, Mr. N. W. Lee; secretary, Mr. H. Thrush. A suggestion from the Manutahi club that it should enter a team was discussed and it was decided to communicate further with the club dealing with the matter at the next meeting, when fixtures will be drawn, up. »

BOWLING SEASON CLOSES. HAWERA OLUB’S CEREMONY. The closing ceremony of the Hawera Bowling Club’s season' was held yesterday, a large number of South Taranaki bowlers attending. During the afternoon friendly games were played. In presenting the trophies won during the season the president, Mr. G. A. Burgess, said the season just ended had been most successful from a playing and social viewpoint. Mention was made of the good performances of Mr. R. Hicks, a veteran bowler, who was run-ner-up for two trophies. Presentations were made to Miss M. Ballantine for her assistance to the club in the afternoons, and to Mr. W. T. Good for his help to the refreshment committee. , At the conclusion of play Messrs. J. Goodwin, president of the Park club, P. Bourke, president of the Patea club, and A. V. Tait, president of the Kaponga club, returned thanks for the hospitality shown. The following were the prizewinners: Championship Singles.—H. 8. Maslin; runner-up, R r Hicks. Bisox Cun.-—F. E. Tait, Wainwright, Dawson (s) 14. KAPONGA SCHOOL. LAST MEETING OF COAEMITTEE. i At the final meeting of the Kaponga school committee prior to the annual meeting of householders on. Monday, Mr. F. W. Fallows presided over the following members: Mrs. I. E. Evans, Messrs. C. N. Gordge and J. Tattersail, and the headmaster, Mr. W. J. A. Farnell. A. letter was received from the Rev. P. J. Cossum, who has left the district, tendering his resignation as secretary to the committee. Mr. Cossum’s resignation was accepted with regret, and it was decided that reference to the service rendered by Mr. Cossum be placed on the minutes. Mrs. Evans was appointed secretary until the new committee is elected. In order to meet the loss from the school picnic it was decided to hold a euchre tourney in the parish hall. HAWERA BRANCH OF W.C.T.U. Among'visitors at the monthly meeting of the Hawera branch of the W. were Mrs. Roberteon, Manaia president; Mrs. Bevan, Normanby president; and Mrs. Haye<s, Timaru. A vote of sympathy was passed to the president, Mrs. Exley and her mother in the sudden loss of a father and husband. Mrs. Phillips reported fully on the Dominion convention at Nelson.

The Hawera railway employees benevolent committee held a successful euchre party last night. Ladies’ prizes were won by Mi's. McAsey 1, Miss Comber 1, Mrs. Doyle (silent) and men’s by Messrs. V. A. Clarke 1 and H. Barnes 2 and silent prize.

While taking part in the football tourney at Manutahi yesterday W. Ruseoc, Stratford, sustained a broken nose.

J. C. Smith advertises particulars of sales to-day at 10 a.m. at Mr. O’Brien’s shop (meat sale) and at the Central Mart, Hawera, at 1.30 p.m.

R. P. Morrissey and Co. advertise particulars of sales at the Union Street Salerooms, Hawera, to-day at l la.m. and 1.15 p.m.

Excellent entries have been received for the annual flower show to be held in the Presbyterian Hall, Hawera, today. A feature of the show will be a. large chrysanthemum exhibit. In conjunction with the show, which is being conducted by the Presbyterian Women’s Missionary Union in aid of missionary funds, there will be fancy goods, produce, sweets and cake stalls. A.fternoon tea will be obtainable.

Forward and store cows, fat cows, bulls, weaner Jersey heifers and sundries will be offered for sale by Messrs. Newton King, Ltd., at their Kaponga sale to-morrow,
