DEATH OF MISS K. FLIGHT

MEMBER -OF PIONEERING" FAMILY. ■ Mi&s K. Flight; a membef of a pioneer family of Taranaki, died at the residence of: her grand-niece, Mrs. Watson, Westown, yesterday. Miss Flight, who had lived all her life in the district, was the daughter of Mr. Josiah' and Mrs. Annie Flight, who arrived from Dorsetshire 'by" the' Timandra in February, 1842, with- many other wellknown early Taranaki .settlers. ' -With: his brother-in-law, the late Mr. | William Devenieh; who came in the same ship, Mr. Flight farmed, on the western banks of the Mangaoraku River, an area "of land between Devon Road and the sea beach. There Miss Flight was born. Narrowly escaping massacre, the family was driven off the land after the upsetting of Commissioner Spain’s award by Governor Fitzroy. The aggressive members of the Puketapu hapu, under Katore, plotted the massacre of the people in the neighbourhood, but the plot was discovered. The family then came to live at Te Henui but their home wasXdestroyed by the Maoris in 1860, along with other homes in the neighbourhood. Mr. Flight was one of the first- Justices of the° Peace appointed for the Colony of New Zealand and for a long time after 1852' he was stipendiary magistrate for the New Plymouth district. _ For many years Miss Flight was a keen social worker in New Plymouth, particularly in . the temperance movement. Lately she had lived a retired life at her old home at the corner of Eliot and Courtenay. Streets. She is .the last member of ope of the old families of Taranaki’ pioneers. ,
