URENUI EX-SERVICEMEN
ENTHUSIASTIC ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of tlie Urenui branch of the Returned Soldiers’ Association wits held Iqst Wight, Mr. J. Rockett, president, presiding oyer an enthusiastic attendance of over 30 members. The president welcomed a number of members from the Uruti district. The chairman’s report and tlje . bal-ance-sheet, .which showed a credit of £5 4s 6d, were adopted. The report wqd as follows: “Of mpst importance is the success of the branch, aided by the New Plymouth executive, iri securing a military and economic pension .for J. S. O’Neill. With regret I record the loss of a valued member in the ReV. Cooinbes, who was transferred to Auckland. Prior to his departure the executive presented him with a pipe and a smoker’s companion suitably inscribed. On Anzac Day in conjunction with the associated, ministers a, parade and memorial service was held at the monument. Favourable comment was expressed on’ the improvement effected by the removal of tiie memorial. The ladies of the district afterwards entertained, ex-servicemen and their wives to afternoon tea in the town . hall.
Although not attracting such a. crowd as in other years the annual ball wqs a success, the profits gained being used towards payment of the memorial Improvements. The annual dinner was a success socially but not financially. Thanks are due to the ladies* committee under the leadership of Mrs. L. Rattenbury for assistance thrpughout the year. Diiripg the year the secretary has enrolled elpven new. members, A function was organised to raise funds for the relief of earthquake victims. The sum of £27 10s was handed to the treasurer of . the earthquake committee. I <Jesire to thank the executive for their help throughout the year.” Officers were elected as follow:— President, Mr. Geo. Loveridge; vicepresidents, Messrs. R. Johnston and. J. Fitzgerald; secretary, Mr. W. Scott; trpasrirers, Messrs. D. Des Forges and W. Scott; delegate, Mr. W. Scott; executive, Messrs. 8. 8. Butt. (Uruti),,B. hramald (Urenui), E. K. BltindeU (Okoke), J.» Johnson, D. L. 'Fate, J. Thompson (Waitoitoi) and A. Smith .(Urenui). It was decided to again hold the annual ball and reunion dinner, this year.
The incoming committee was pocomir)endOd to have the ground abound the iiionument sown down in lawn. It was reported that Miss Elliott, a member of the Urcnui school staff, had offered £0 keep the lawn in order. A vote of thanks to the ladies of the district who hsd assisted the branch was carried and the retiring president was accorded thanks.
