PREPARATIONS BY REBELS
THREAT OF BOMBARDMENT
By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. London April 26. Perfect order reigns at Funchal, Madeira, but there are grave apprehensions. The rebels are hurriedly erecting sandbag breastworks in view of the expected attack by the punitive expedition from Lisbon. The leaders are demanding liberty and the reinstatement of Parliament. ■" They declare that the island is ready to fight, but unwilling to begin hostilities. Lisbon’s auxiliary cruiser Nyassa is going co Madeira, taking a third contingent of troops and two seaplanes. She is expected to arrive at the Island or Porto Santo, the base of operations, on April 27.
When the Government concentration is complete the Minister of/War will issue an ultimatum to the rebels from seaplanes, demanding Unconditional surrender within a few hours. If the ultimatum is rejected a bombardment, assisted by aeroplanes, will begin.
