HARRIERS CLUB’S PICNIC

DAY AT HUATOKI DOMAIN. » The annual picnic of the New Plymouth Harrier Club was held at the Huatoki domain over the week-end, and although the day was slightly overcast in the morning it brightened as the day proceeded and in all very enjoyable conditions prevailed. The 10.20 a.m. bus to Vogeltown carried a full load who mostly went to the domain. The early arrivals were surprised to find they were not first as one lone harrier had forgotten to adjust his time-piece and was patiently waiting. While the billy boiled some strenuous sports were enjoyed. Lunch was taken under the trees, the party numbering over 50 sitting on the ground in groups. In the high jump championship a good exhibition saw Robertson win at 4ft lOiin, with Hings ton second a half inch behind. Hodgson was a good third.

Other events resulted: — Pqtting the shot.—Robertson 1, A. Thompson 2, H. H. Brown 3. Some good efforts were recorded by Stewart Hunter, L. Thompson and Smith. Relay race, 10-a-side championship.— Miss Brown’s team 1, Miss Stephens’ team 2. As Miss Stephens’ team had one girl more than Miss Brown’s a handicap was run and the same team was again victorious. A lengthy game of rounders proved rather an endurance test as the ball frequently lodged in the tree tops or the gorse bushes. An attempt to. give the winners once across for handicap purposes proved a “frost.” The first heat had eight starters and the second three. Lander was first across in the first and Lankshear in the second,. The coldness of the water, however, precluded any further races. The corfu dive was won by Sadler and the most awkwirl eutry by White. It was, however, that the records clerk made a grave mistake as White was not in this particular event. He was, he said, giving an exhibition dive when he was judged. The standing jump and the hop-step-and-jump provided a few surprises. Good efforts were recorded by Kingston, Robertson, Stewart and A. Thompson in the A grade and White, J. Kaymer, L. Thompson and Lander in the B grade. An event towards the close of a very enjoyable day was the “pushing off” of the Hurworth party. The car would have cleared the grounds quite four minutes sooner had the harriers not attempted to help by pushing behind. The next time the harriers will be together will be at the Hurworth sports on March 21, when a three mile special harrier cross-country event will be contested. The club’s handicapper will declare handicaps early in the week. One condition in this race is that no person can take a prize unless he is wearing a harrier training jersey.*
