REDUCING HOSPITAL LEVY

HAWERA BOARD’S LOAN SCHEME.

REPAYMENT PERIOD EXTENSION.

An important economy proposal .is being put on foot by the Hawera Hospital Board, which, if successful, will enable a reduction of nearly one-third in the levy for the financial year 193132. , Under the terms of the £lOO,OOO building loan the board has to repay eight £lOOO hypothecation debentures each year. The board has now applied to the bank for an extension of a year in the repayment of the loan, so that no payments would be made next year other than the ordinary interest • payments. A return submitted■ to the hoard showed that only £347 10s 8d would have to be raised from levies and subsidy if this were done. The Health Department has agreed to the suggestion, which will now have to receive the approval of the Local Bodies’ Loans Board. The final decision will rest with the bank. Last year maintenance expenditure was estimated at £16,031 18s Id and capital expenditure at £7327 10s lOd, a total of £23,359 8s lid. A reduction of £BOOO in this would' be one-third, but occupied beds continue to increase ■so that maintenance costs will be rather higher this year. Even so, however, the postponement of the repayment would enable a substantial reduction in the levy for next year on local bodies, which the board considers, highly desirable at the present juncture. The £BOOO not repaid next year will not be added to the amount payable in 1932-33, but will be paid at the end -of the currency of the loan. The department suggested that the £BOOO be paid back in two equal-sums during 1932-33 and 1933-34.
