SMITH WINS SOUTH BOWLS

MASLIN JUST BEATEN IN FINAL, WONDERFUL DRAWING DISPLAY. . A beautiful-cluster of .four touches that could have been covered by a top hat was only one of the highlights of the final of the South Taranaki champion of champions bowling contest yesterday. Smith (Park) beat Maslin (Hawera) 23—18 in a game of fluctuating fortunes and. brilliant bowling. On almost every'head -the shot 'bowl at least was within six inches of kitty. The qther two competitors were Christie (Manaia) and Richards (Patea). They were outclassed on the day, however, by the two town skips, whose drawing was little short of perfect. The games were played on the Park green, which was in wonderful order, tho weather conditions being ideal. Smith opened up the final with a toucher with his first bowl and followed with another with his third. Maslin missed with a drive, and before he could try another Smith had put in a block. On the second head Maslin got a nice shot about a foot short of the jack and placed another near it. Smith cut out one, but Maslin levelled the tallies with his next bowl. Maslin threw the jack for a long head, playing a n£e first bowl while Smith was not up. Smith continued to play narrow, so that the head gave the Hawera man 2. There was some fine drawing on the next head, Maslin holding the advantage. The first five bowls were within a foot of the jack and then Smith slightly displaced the kitty to lie three. His opponent was unable to alter the head. Maslin drew two beauties on the next with one right in. front. The Park champion 'wicked, in' for second, shot, Maslin, however, promoting one to, regain the lead, 6 —5. Threq went to Maslin on the sixth head, but on the next Smith gave a wonderful exhibition, drawing four touchers to make the scores equal again. It was great bowling. Maslin went away again with a brace on the eighth head and. three on the next. Smith lay two on. the next, when Maslin came inside him. Smith’s last bowl ,was a nice one, but it was only second shot, Maslin getting the first single of the match. The Park drew two touchers and the third shot on the next head and Maslin . could only' knock one out. He was three up again, Maslin’s last bowl taking one out. He drew a toucher with his first bowl on the next head and added another with his second, going to three, with his last, to take the lead, 16—15. He increased it with a single on each of the next two heads. Maslin lay two on the next when Smith promoted a short bowl to lead 19—15. He had another one bn the next with the shot bowl, less than a foot from the jack, Maslin drawing a beauty with his last to reduce the deficit by one. Maslin threw the jack for a very long head and another single. Another single from a dead, draw, to Maslin brought the score to only 18—19 against him. Another single and Smith only wanted one.. Maslin drew a nice shot, but the Park man effected another of his touches, then drawing a second. Maslin tried to ■ run them off but missed with a good drive. The games resulted:—' FIRST ROUND. Maslin (Hawera) beat Christie (Manaia), 21—3. Smith (Park) beat Richards (Patea), •21—8. , SECOND ROUND. Richards beat Christie, 21—12. Maslin beat Smith, 21 —12. THIRD ROUND. Smith beat Richards, 21—17. • FOURTH ROUND. Smith beat Maslin, 22—18. . CLAIM AGAINST AN ESTATE. JUDGMENT FOR TRUSTEE,. Kuratau Whaipakanga, ! otherwise known ■" as Kuratau' Hunt, of Hawera, proceeded against the Public Trustee as administrator of the estate of William Woller,- deceased, seeking £l5 as the purchase price of a horse and gig, in the Hawera Magistrate's Court yesterday before -Mr. J. H. Salmon, S.M. The horse and gig were allegedly sold to deceased in November, 1929. Mr. Beechey appeared Tor plaintiff and Mr. A. K. North for defendant. Judgment was given for defendant. The sale was admitted by the defence, but it was held that payment, in the form of cash to the value of £5 and £6, plus a bull, had been made. Several witnesses besides Hunt and his wife were heard. The Magistrate said the case was a most unsatisfactory one. The court required corroboration. The evidence of Hunt and Mrs. Hunt alone left him in doubt as to who was the real owner of the property in question. Under the circumstances he would give judgment for defendant, the case of plaintiff not being satisfactorily proved.

HAWERA THEATRE PROGRAMMES.

“GRUMPY? FINALLY TONIGHT.

All those who , had the pleasure of seeing the eminent English character actor, Cyril * Maude in “Grumpy” during the war years will .want to see the talkie version showing’ at the Opera House, Hawera, finally to-day and tonight; those who did not see Maude in the flesh should not miss seeing the film, for it presentsone of the outstanding personalities of the English stage in his greatest part with perfect faithfulness. The witnessing of the screen version, with the advantage it gives of seeing and hearing every detail, no matter in what part of the house one may be seated, brings home forcefully to those who saw the original the remarkable qualities of Maude’s acting. Every little gesture seems so fresh and natural —and yet it has not altered one iota during all the years that have passed since he first perfected the part. The four Marz Brothers, the stars of the comedies ''Cocoanuts” and “Cuckoos,” will again ba seen and heard at the Opera House in an even funnier comedy, “Animal Crackers,” commencing to-morrow at a matinee at 2 p.m. and extending for a three-night season. Reserves may be made at Miss Blake’s, phone 2713. To-night at the Grand Theatre, and finally on Saturday night, Radio Pictures’ all-talking underworld drama, “Framed,” will be shown at the Grand.
