URGENT APPEAL TO SENATE

Oversea and inter-State shipowners have issued a statement condemning the arbitrary enforcement by Government regulation of preference of employment for members of the Waterside Workers’ Federation, which the High Court recently held to be valid.
The statement appeals to the Senate to act swiftly to disallow it, otherwise there wilt recur cumulative hold-ups and disastrous strikes of the character which paralysed shipping in 1028. The shipowners ask what hope can there be for peace and continuity" of work on the waterfront when volunteer labour ia forbidden by the Government regulation and the efficient volunteer labour, which afforded' industrial peace for two and a-half years, is replaced by those hitherto guilty ■*:, turmoil, strife and great losses to efl'e primary producers.

The latest development in the political situation is a resolution passed by a meeting at Ddrrigo urging the State Governor to exercise his power and dismiss hia present advisers as untrustworthy and unworthy"’ of their position.
The mover declared: “There is a devilish movement in Australia to upset all that the King stands for.”
CIVIL SERVICE WAGE REDUCTIONS
NEW ARBITRATOR APPOINTED.
Melbourne. Feb. 25.
Mr. J. C. Westhbven, deputy-director of Postal Services, has been appointed Federal public service arbitrator in succession to Mt. Atlee Hunt, who retired last year. The position carries a salary of £2OOO. The arbitrator. has power to fix the salaries and wages of Federal public servants,, over-riding the Public Service Commissioners.
The appointment is regarded as the result of the Cabinet decision to proceed. with salary reductions. The arbitrator hafl the status of a judge, his awards are binding and the Government is relieved of the responsibility of making reductions.
