REVISION OF WHEAT DUTY
A STATEMENT AMPLIFIED PRESENT HARVEST UNAFFECTED. ■PRIME MINISTER’S EXPLANATION By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. Amplifying the statement he made in Christchurch concerning a sliding scale of wheat duties, the . Right Hon. G W. Forbes to-day said he wanted it clearly understood that any . readjustment that might be made would have absolutely,no effect on the present crops. Wheat growers might rest assured that any arrangements made in respect to the present crops would stand as far a-, the-Government -was concerned. The G ivernment’s decision would affect only future crops. Asked if legislation would be needed to give effect to the decision of the Government, ■ the Prime Minister stated that that aspect of the matter was being looked into by the Customs Department. It was his belief the Government had power to deal with the matter without legislation. In reply to a suggestion that in the past the question of wheat duties had proved a rather delicate matter on the floor of the House, Mr. Forbes smilingly observed, “There will be quite a lot of delicate matters on the floor of the House during the coming session of Parliament.”
