SENATE AND PRESIDENT

CLASH ON FINANCE BILL

MR. HOOVER’S OPPOSITION

BIG HOSTILE MAJORITY

VETO TO BE OVERRIDDEN

By Telegraph—Preiss Assn. —Copyright.

Rec. 7 p.m. Washington, Feb. 19. The Senate, despite President Hoover’s opposition, passed by 72 votes tc 12 the Veterans’ Loan Relief Bill to adjust compensation certificates from 221 to 50 per cent, of their face value.

The Bill had already been passed by the House of Representatives. The estimated cost is 700,000,000 dollars. Senator Reed, Pennsylvania, admitting the Bill would pass, supported the President vigorously. He asked: “Why under Heaven in times of stress should we pour our money for the benefit of a particular group at the expense of every other group?”
