South Africa made a bold bid for victory in the afternoon and only failed to secure a dramatic win by 51. It was a race against time, and the clock won. The match ended in a draw. Mitchell deserved tl/e distinction of being South Africa’s highest scorer with Curnow. He averted any fears of immediate cob lapse. Had Curnow, shown more enterprise South Africa might have won. The hero of the day was Cameron, who, deciding to go for the runs, hit the bowling stylishly, correctly and effectively. The English attack was steady, but lacked Saturday’s fire. Nevertheless, the, batsmen could not afford to take risks. Mitchell was in 130 minutes for a stylish 74, including 12 Cameron’s fine undefeated effort was applauded. It included ten boundaries.
