For nearly four hours yesterday the Viceroy and Mr. Gandhi had a frank talk on India’s constitutional progress. The talk is being resumed to-day. There are indications that Mr. Gandhi is eager for a compromise involving co-operation in the resumed work of the round-table confer ence in India.
The Prime Minister in the House of Commons stated the Government had been considering, in consultation with the Viceroy, how best to carry on the Indian negotiations begun in London, says a British Official Wireless message. When the arrangements were completed they would be announced in the House of Commons. Mr.. MacDonald coupled this statement with a denial, of the rumour that Captain Wedgewood Benn, Secretary for India, and Mr. J. 11. Thomas, Lord Privy Seal, were shortly proceeding on a mission tc India. Due to trade depression and civil disobedience the state railways lost £3,250,000 last year. COMMUNAL RIOTS WORSE MORE LOOTING IN BENARES. MANY MOHAMMEDANS FLEEING. Delhi, Feb. 17. Far from improving, the communal situation in holy Benares has become Woi'se during the past two days. It is now' revealed that 15 are dead and nearly 200 injured. An entire family was stabbed to death, while in another part of the city 20 houses were burned and property looted. Panic continues in the city. Many rich Mohammedans are fleeing for safety. Unless the. situation improves soon, troops will take charge. BURMA DELEGATES THREATENED OBJECTION TO SEPARATION PLAN.Delhi, Feb. 17. A sensational revelation was made at Rangoon that the Burmese revolutionary party has written letters to the wives of the round-table conference delegates informing them that their husbands will, soon be killed for advo/ catirtg separation from India.
