PERJURY CHARGE

FOOTBALLER ACQUITTED. At Parramatta, Sydney, recently, a jury returned a verdict of not guilty in the case of Neil Matterson, aged 27, a former inter-State footballer, who was charged with perjury. It was alleged that Matterson committed the offence in the course of his evidence in a charge of street betting. Matterson was convicted of betting, but his appeal is pending. When the foreman delivered the verdict the judge said: “That, gentlemen, is your verdict. It is not mine.” There was a wild rush in the back'of the court, and the judge ordered the police to bring two men who took part in it before him. Each was fined £l.
