He looked well enough each day, but his indifferent performances make him a hard horse to understand. * * * * His wretched display in the Paritutu Juvenile Handicap, after his sparkling win the first day, stamps Paratoo as little better than a mongrel. He was in a winning position coming into the straight, but dug his toes in as soon as the pressure was applied. * « * * Although most of the horses trained in the Hawke’s Bay did not suffer in the earthquake, at least one was extensively injured, . particularly about the legs. This was Ganpat, who was just coming into good form, and it is now certain that it will be some time before he is fit to race again. * * * * Arikira, who won the Nolan Cup at Hawera, is aptly named, for he was foaled at almost the hour that the clocks were first advanced for “Summer Time,” and the Maori word meaning “Jord of the sun” was thereupon bestowed upon him. The name is additionally appropriate, for Limond, his sire, is descended through Sunrise and Sunray front the famous brood mare Sunshine, and the component “sun” is common among the names appearing in hie extended pedigree.
