RELIEF FUND ENTERPRISES. (From Our Own Correspondent.) On Thursday evening a number of members of the old Red Carnival committee and a number of others met at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. E. W. Blackwell and decided to assist the earthquake relief fund by holding a euchre tourney and dance in the town hall next Friday night. All present formed themselves into a committee, of which those ladies present were appointed to take charge of the supper arrangements, with Mrs. Blackwell in charge, whilst the men undertook other details. It was stated that all the prizes for the euchre tourney had been donated already. The following were appointed doorkeepers: Messrs. H. A. T. Gallagher, J. H. Tyack, L. Loveridge and E. W. Blackwell. The Kaponga Brass Band is to be asked to assist by playing a few selections outside the hall. On Friday afternoon a street stall was conducted by Mesdames E. W. Blackwell, A. W. Anderson and L. Loveridge, assisted by Miss Joan Gallagher, for the relief fund. With a most generous response to the appeal for gifts, those in charge had a large and varied assortment of garden produce, preserves, cakes, poultry and fruit, which was practically all disposed of, the proceeds amounting to £9 odd. A competition for a gander was won by Mr. Jos. Peters, and that for a box of chocolates by Mr. ( W« G. Oran. CROQUET TEAM’S SUCCESS. On Wednesday afternoon on the local green a team of the croquet club contested a match for the Campbell Cup against an Eltham team, Kaponga winning by 48 points to 41. This places the local team in the semi-finals for this trophy. The visitors were hospitably entertained to afternoon tea. Following are details of the afternoon’s play, the visitors being mentioned first in each case: Mesdames McKay and McCready 15 v. Mesdames J. A. Dawson and J. Tattersail 26, Mrs. Fountaine and Miss McDonald 26 v. Mrs. A. V. Tait and Mrs. C. H. Brewer 22.

FINAL FOR BOWLING BANNER. On Saturday afternoon on the Kaponga bowling green the final banner match of the western division took place between the A and B teams. Much healthy rivalry had been in evidence during the week, but the A team proved far too good for the B. The A team now secures the championship of the Western division, having only had fvo losses in banner matches. Following are results of the afternoon’s -nlay:— A. B. V. Tait, N. Gardner, W. G. J -A 18 Totals 69 32 HORTICULTURAL SHOW PLANS. The executive committee of St. Mark’s Horticultural Show met on Friday evening, the Rev. A. J. Farnell presiding over a full attendance. The secretary (Mr. A. W. Anderson) read letters from the following stating their willingness to act as judges at the show: Mrs. H. T. Lovell (Hawera, Mrs. H. Grace (Kaponga), Messrs. H. Betts (Okaiawa), R. Dunn (New Plymouth), C. Goodson (Hawera) and W. Moss (Ngaere). The appointment of a judge for tihe cooking and sewing sections was left in Mrs. Brewer’s hands. The secretary was authorised to arrange for the hiring of a tent to stage the exhibits of farm and. garden produce, as it was felt that there was insufficient room in the hall to accommodate this section. Plans for the evening entertainment were made, a number of novelty events being arranged' for, and the Kaponga Brass Band, is to be asked to play selections. The secretary was instructed to order a further supply of schedules, which it is expected will be required during the last few days previous to the closing of entries.
