HERD-TESTING RESULTS

SOUTH TARANAKI FIGURES. MR. LYNDON’S HERD BEST YIELD. With an average test of 4.682 the 7095 cows tested by the South Taranaki Herd-Testing Association for the period ended. February 13 gave an average yield of 7261 b. of milk or 341 b. of but-ter-fat. In the preceding period 6975 cows had averaged. 8661 b. of milk at a 4.532 test, an average yield of 39.201 b. Mr. W. F. Lyndon’s herd, returned the best figures. His 67 cows averaged 876 lb. of milk at a 4.8 test, the yield being 42.311 b. In the lowest herd 50 cows averaged 5421 b. of milk, at a 4.6 test, a yield of 25.121 b. of butter. The cow with the highest individual yield, owned by Mr. T. Wilson, Ararata, produced 79 lb. of fat and the lowest 51b. of fat. Messrs. D. and. J. Gibson hud the best herd of over 100 cows, their animals averaging 38.491 b. of fat. Mr. J. GENERAL ITEMS. Men employed by the Hawera Borough Council under the No. 5 relief scheme are being paid 13s per day. Seventy men will receive employment under the No. 5 relief scheine through the South Taranaki Relief Committee this week. Twenty-six of the men are of the four-day class, 24 of the three-day and 20 of the two-day. The total working days thus divided for the week is 202. The work has been arranged by the Hawera Borough Council, the Hawera County Council, the Hawera School Committee, the Normanby Town Board and the Normanby School Committee. In addition, six men were detailed to report to the Waimate West County Council at Manaia yesterday. A total of 128 J working days was allocated last week among 36 men, the periods of work ranging from half a day to 12 days. The scout rally which was to have been held at Palmerston North in honour of the Chief Scout’s visit has now been abandoned in favour of the original arrangement to hold the gathering at Wellington, according to a telegram received yesterday by Mr. F. W. Horner, South Taranaki Boy Scouts Commissioner, from General Sir Alfred Robin, Metropolitan Commissioner. Further registrations of refugees at the Hawera relief depot are: Mrs. J. C. Hounsell and two children, Vautier Street, Napier; Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Stewart, 408 French Street, Hastings; Miss Josephine Hutchens, Puketitirio; Mre. A. Roche and Mr. V. Roche, 74 Munro Road, Napier; Mrs. A. W. Bird and two children, schoolhouse, Erasertown.

Ten bullocks, 50 cows, 16 heifers, 433 sheep, 163 lambs, 9 calves and 45 pigs were slaughtered at the Hawera abattoir during January. Fees totalled £73 19s 6d, £o 8s 6d less than in the same month last year. The membership of the Hawera library is 483, twelve less than at the end of January, 1930. Two building pernlits to the value of £230 were issued in Hawera last month.

The Municipal Association advised the Hawera Borough Council last night t!’.„t in consequence of the present national emergency, particularly the disastrous earthquake, no conference would be held this year.
