PACIFIC DISTURBANCE

RAROTONGA AFFECTED.

ROUGH SEA ON GAUM DAT.

A submarine disturbance is thought / to have occurred in the Pacific three days before Napier was wrecked by .the earthquake, according to private advice* received, in Auckland from Rarotonga. When the Royal Mail liner Monowai reached Rarotonga at six o’clock on the morning of January 31 she was unable to enter the port owing to the sea in the harbour being in such a. turmoil that it was impossible to do any cargo work. The rough seas were not caused by the weather, which was fine at the time, and it is thought that the conditions were the result of a tidal wave caused by a volcanic eruption in the sea bottom in the Pacific. , No damage is reported to have been done in the Cook Group by the .tidal wave and the sea in Rarotonga Harbour moderated at mid-day the .sam© day. In the afternoon the Monowai was able to work the port and later in th© day. she resumed her voyage to Pa* peete and San Francisco.
