MOTORIST ATTACKED
INCIDENT on road.
ASSAILANTS DISCOMFORTED.
A hold-up is reported to have occurred on a' road in the Havelock North district, and the following story is vouched for by a prominent Hastings business, man. ~ • .• A young man, named David Christie, had been "engaged in the evacuation of refugees. Returning with an empty car, he was stopped by a man at whose feet lay another who appeared to be injured. As soon as the driver pulled up, the man on. the ground arose and both attacked him. By good luck, Mr. Christie is a local boxer and has also studied ju jitsu. Keeping a cool head, he promptly engaged one of the men, secured a ju jitsu° hold and threw him, apparently breaking an arm. The other man took to his heels when Mr. Christie rushed toward him. This gave the injured man an opportunity to escape. Mr. Christie reported the incident to the police and it is stated that the police have secured a man whose arm was injured. There is no suggestion. that local people are responsible for this and other lawless episodes. There is no doubt that the floating criminal population has gravitated toward the stricken zone and, this being so, restrictions upon the movement of people to and from the town should not be questioned provided they are - within reason. - •
