VERTIGERN WINS THE CUP

DETERMINED FINISHING EFFORT

The defection of Bright Glow, Silvermine, The Swell and Maui left eleven to contest the . Taranaki Cup, and a

fine race was provided, Vertigern finishing determinedly to beat High Faintin’ and In the Shade, who nearly fell at the beginning of the race. A late commission tent In the Shade ( £291) oi;t a. better favourite than Otairi ( £253 15s) and Concentrate ( £226 5b)..

High Falutin’ was badly left at the start and Otairi showed out from Royal Parade, Caishier, Chopin and Vertigern. Chopin, Otairi and Royal Parade were on terms into the straight, but Vertigern quickly ran past them and showed the way out of' the straight from Royal Parade, First Acre, Chopin, Otairi, Cashier, High Faintin’ and In. the Shade. The last-named ran into the bunch and R. S. Bagby was knocked off, but he landed on the rails and scrambled back for a remarkable recovery. High Falutin’ moved up fast: at the six furlongs and led down-the back from Royal Parade, with Vertigern, The Hawk and First Acre in the next bunch, and Otairi and In the Shade following. At the High School bend High Falutin’ was clear, and he was showing the way to a bunch which included First Acre, Vertigern, Royal Parade, In the Shade and Otairi. High

Falutin’ was first to straighten up from First Acre, Vertigern and In the Shade, but Vertigern threw out a challenge At the distance and came away in his best style to win by a length, In the Shade finisjhino- weakly into third place behind High... Falutin’. . First Acre was. fourth and Otairi, Chopin, Concentrate,. Roya,l Parade. The Hawk, Cashier ■ and White Fang followed in that order. Vertigern improved on his > second last year to The Hawk. He was ridden ai fine race by T. Green and though. di-awn on the outside of the field was on the rails half-way up the straight, and was not bustled until the last quarter of a mile. He finished strongly in the manner which characterises his best form. High Falutin’ was a trifle unlucky, losing ground at. the start, and his showing was much above his HaWera form. In the Shade struck tiouble going . oiit ■of the straight dnd 'that probably cost him the race. He'made up a lot of ground down the back, and Was left Without any sting at', th? finish.' First Acre ran hjs beat race .since returning from Australia, but Otaiii s fpi-iii was disappointing. Concentrate looked a trifle big. " ■ ' ■ . MONALOF PAYS A PRICE. _ : The punters tumbled over themselves to be on Crennatown ( £3BO 15s) in the Okato Handicap and Joyspear ( £270 ss) was the only other seriously fancied/ Little Doubt was badly left at the. start and Joyspear showed the way out of tfie straight from Monalof, Werata, Solange and Rich Harvest, while Crennatown stumbled at the same place as In the Shade had done. Tentcall was rushed through when the six furlong peg was reached and led down the back stretch . from Joyspear, Werata and Banbridge, and Crennatown made a forward move and had run in behind Tentcall apd Joyppear when, the bend

was reached, Banbridge and Werata following him, Monalof headed Tentcall into the straight, where Crennatown challenged, but the favourite's .effort was I short-lived and. Monalof Stayed on to win by a length from Tentcall, while Banbridge.got up to secure third money a length further back.' Crennatown was fourth and Gasnapper, Werata, Rich Harvest and Joyspear next. Monalof ran her best race for some time and scored well. Tentcall again w as unlucky in the running. Banbridge ran his usual good race blit Uremiatown’s showing was a long way below form. He had every chance, but shirked his task over the last bit. However, he hit tlie rail hard when he stumbled goin'" out of the straight and received injuries that will keep him off the scene' for some time. CHIEF LINK STAYS ON WELL. Handled judiciously, Chief Link won the Mimi High-weight in good style. A heavy backing came at the finish for Taiko ( £3OB ss) and he wound up favourite over Melissa ( £298 10s). Callapat and Chief Link were first away, but on reaching the course proper Green Linnet joined Callapat, with three lengths to Chief Link and Melissa, and Paiko and Monsogne following. Callapat and Green Linnet led around the bend and into the straight from Melissd, Chief Link,' Monsogne and Calamine. The leaders were soon beaten gnd Chief Lipk was in front at the distance from Melissa and Callapat, with Calamine showing up on the outside.: Chief Link was not seriously troubled over the last 50 yards' and won by the best part'of a. length from Melissa, who was doing her best to beat Calamine by "A ueck for second money. Callapat, Kawhakina, Paiko .and Monsogiip followed. Chief Link has previously found six furlongs hard to get, but Gray handled him patiently and nursed him until the .straight WHS r<?aehed. Melissa had every Chance but she had no finishing effort and wap lucky to secure second money. Calamine ran'a. fair race, but the others were not much good, Paiko beiijg a very bad failure.

TEA QUEEN BEATS CHIEF SAVAGE

Arikira (£356 10$),. Chief Savage ( £290 10s) and Royal Finance £254

ss) carried the bulk of the investments in the Tirnaru Handicap, but they were soundly beaten by the consistent Tea Queei), who was allowed to go out at a false price. Anbridge and Cereal were troublesome at. (he. barrier. Silver Rule was< first out from. Chief Savage, Tea Queen and Singer. Chief Savage was with Silver Rule at. the half-mile and Tea Queen, Anbridge' and Singer were in the next .bunch, with Royal Finance and Arikira, who was hemmed in on the rails,, following, them around the bend.' Silver Rule led Chief Savage, Tea Queen and Royal Finance into the Straight, but she quickly retired and left -Tea Queen .clear.; In the rqn to the judge Tea Queen was not extended and she won by a couple of lengths from Chief Savage, who beat Singer by three-quarters of a length for second place. Col-Wen and Arikira Were together next' and were followed by Silver Rule, Cereal and Royal Finance. Tea Qdeen rgn good races at Trentliani and Hawera,- where the luck of the start was against her, but on this occasion she was always handy and won with a dot in hand. Chief Savage had every chance and’ so did Sihger, but Arikira was very unlucky to finish outside the money. He had to lose .several lengths to get out of a bad position coming into the straight, but when it was apparent he could not get in the money he was not knocked about. SECOND DAY’S WEIGHTS.
