EFFORTS FOR RELIEF FUND. I - .•/><! .f ’ ■./I'.'l (From Our Own Correspondent.)' ■A general meeting of the Kaponga Amateur Theatrical Society was held in the town hall on Monday evening, Mr. C. A. Corder presiding. Tho purpose of the meeting, tho chairman stated, was to consider how tho society could assist the earthquake relief fund. A proposal to repeat the operetta “The Princess of Poppyland” was rejected and it was decided to hold a concert and dance in the town hall at an early date. However, at a special meeting of the executive on Tuesday afternoon tho decision was cancelled, it being understood that various efforts by other parties in this direction were well advanced, and in view of these arrangements it was inadvisable to proceed. It is understood that, a street stall will be conducted in the township this afternoon by a number of ladies, this being the first effort here in aid of the funds. Gifts of saleable articles will be gratefully received at the stall. IMPROVEMENTS IN THE TOWN. A very pleasing improvement in the appearance of the “Coflee Palace coiner is just now taking place. The premises are being converted into bank chambers. For some years also the corner was somewhat “blurred” by a massive and rather unsightly concrete electric liwht pole, which has now become obsolete. Recently the electrical engineer (Mr. A. W. Anderson) and staff demolished the pole and erected a hardwood one in its place. Considerable ingenuity was displayed in the dismantling of this heavy concrete structure and the services of a pole erecting crane was requisitioned. During the time the power was cut off from the power house opportunity was taken to empty the dam and carry out cleaning work. At the ■same time the intake at the dam was rebuilt and a control for the flood gate was also installed. On all this work opportunity was taken to give employment to a number of local unemployed men. During the emptying of the dams a large number of eels were discovered and considerable entertainment was provided for the youth of the town in catching the elusive fish. v KAPONGA BRASS BAND. After a period of inactivity members of the Kaponga 'Brass Band held a practice on Tuesday evening in the Town Hall. There was a fine muster of 16 members. It is not known whether members can attend practices regularly enough 'to permit of their entering for the 'band contest at Hawera in March. PERSONAL. Mrs. J. H.
