GUARANTEE CAUSES DIFFICULTY.

With a deficiency of £328 Bs, 10d., Adam Pickering, described as a salesman, Hawera, appeared in bankruptcy befoie the Deputy Official Assignee (Mr. R.- S. Sage) at Hawera yesterday. _ After inquiring into bankrupt’s position, the creditors present agreed to adjourn the meeting, the D.O.A. and Mr. Caplen being instructed, to do what they could m realising on the property. . , . Bankrupt’s total debts amounted to £2203 Bs. 10d., made up of £913 8s ; lOd. owing to unsecured creditors ana £1290 to secured creditors. The estimated value of securities was £lB5O, leaving a surplus of £560. Assets totalled £1875, property being valued at £lB5O, and stock in trade at £25. In February, 1928, Pickering, accordin’’' to his signed statement, said that he°had sold his interest in the soap business he had for some time been engaged in at Fitzroy, New Plymouth. He purchased a 10-acre farm at Fitzroy, payin- in cash about £520 and afterwards spending about £350 in improvements. He used the place as a pig farm, but it did not pay, and he gave it up in August, 1930, going out with only about £l4O in cash. After paying certain accounts he had only gome- £6O left. Bankrupt went in September, 1930, to • Hawera, where he had a house and shop property at the corner of Argyle and Surrey Streets. He hoped to realise on this property. He commenced, in business in a sffiall way as a car .painter. After getting the business going he was called upon ‘by the New Plymouth Finance Go., Ltd., to pay, under a guaiantee he had given, the amount. of one W. Marr’s indebtedness (approximately £360) to that company. Pickering had given that guarantee originally to assist his brother, who was in a bakery business. He met with ipisfortune and had to sell out,and he was unable to sell unless he continued his guarantee on behalf of his successor, W. Marr. As the company threatened hint with immediate proceedings, and as he could not realise on his Hawera property, bankrupt had no alternative but to file. Property possessed by bankrupt •comprised 45.47 ■ perches at the cornet), of Surrey and Argyle Streets, Hawera. On the property was a dwelling, two shops and a paint shop. The dwelling and the two ordinary shops were let at 365. weekly, the lease having about two,years to run. The paint shop was at present unoccupied and was wprth about 255. weekly. Rates were £9 6s. 7d.' per annum, while the total fire insurance on the four buildings was £l3OO. Pickering in answer to Mr. G. J. Bay; ley, said that he had not “fivepence” to his name at present. He was owed no money. Though he had been busy since starting his painting business in Hawera, he had paid up old, expenses with what money he received. Since December-24 he had not paid any wages to his two employees. The unsecured creditors were as follows: —Commercial Bank £l2O, Newton King, Ltd., £32, W. W. (Wanganui) £l7 4s. 10d., Mason, Struthers and Co. (Wanganui) £l5, Kidd, Garrett and Co. (Auckland) £l4, C. Gibbons £l5, W. M. Thompson £ll, Hawera Hospital Board £1 Is., R. H. Leece and Co. £2 14s. ,6d., Fred. Brunette £3 17s. 6d., Hurrell Bros., £3 19s. 6d., Eginont Tour'ist Motors £3 14s. (all of Hawera). Miss Newton and Misses Leatham, Lower Hutt, are the guests of Mrs. W. R. Boyd. Mrs. Boyd has received word that her mother, Mrs. Otter, Hastings, who was involved in the earthquake, has died of 1 shock at Wellington. Master Pat Bourke, son of Air. and Mrs. M. Bourke, had the misfortune to break his collarbone as the .result of a fall from his pony while from school on Tuesday. AUROA PERSONALS. The Rev. Father Hyde, Whangarei, is the guest of Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Bradford for a fortnight. Miss Boylan, Okato, is a guest of Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Bradford. Mr. J. Scheuber is in the Hawera Hospital. Mr. and Mrs. S. W. Penman, Auroa, who are spending an extended holiday in Britain, have just completed a tour of Ayrshire, Scotland. Mr. Merton Bradford will return to Holy Cross College, Mosgiel, this month to continue his studies for the priesthood. ' MANAIA TALKIES. “UNDER A TEXAS MOON.”

The scenes of “Under a Texas Moon” are exquisite, all being taken in the colours of Nature. The capable cast is headed by the inimitable Frank Fay as Don Carlos. Many of the famous beauties of the screen are included, among them Armida, Raquel Torres, Myrna Loy, Mona Maris, Betty Boyd and Edythe Kramera. Western bad men are played by Noah Beery, Tully Marshall, Georgia Stone, George Cooper, Fred Kohler, Jack Curtis, Sam Appel, Tom Dix, Jerry Barrett, Francisco Maram, Charles Sellon and’Bruce Covington.
