The Mayor,\Mr. E. Pacey, acknowledges the following dohations: —

The general relief funds will benefit considerably by the sale of the Daily News photographs of the stricken area. Numerous South Taranaki residents have left large orders for them. In the Opera House last night the Wanganui Garrison and Hawera Municipal Bands in conjunction presented a sacred concert. The collection was in aid of the relief funds; The Wanganui Band’s concert at Ngaere Gardens in the afternoon was also for the relief of distress. The Opera House was given for the concert last night while the staff also gave its services voluntarily. At the Hawera County Council meeting on Saturday, sympathy with the affected area was expressed and the clerk was instructed to write to the Mayors of Naper and Hastings and the chairman of the Hawke’s Bay County Council. When the Hawera Pipe Band played in the streets on Saturday night a collection for the relief fund was taken. A euchre party will be held in St. Joseph’s Hall to-morrow night. ' Meetings to consider relief measures will be held -at Manaia this afternoon and evening. To-night there will be the song recital by Miss C. Reilly and Mr. R. Harrison, assisted by Misses Mara Mackie and Jean Sheild, in the Grand Theatre, Hawera. Music lovers will have the opportunity of attending an artistic recital and of assisting the relief funds. PATEA ANXIOUS TO HELP. The Pa tea Borough Council chambers were inadequate to accommodate the attendance at the meeting held to organise Patea’s relief measures for earthquake sufferers. The Mayor (Mr. F. Ramsbottom), who presided, said it was gratifying to see the manner- in which both town and country settlers had attended to render assistance. -Hurleyville, Alton, Whenuakura and Kakaramea districts were each anxious to be represented and a delegate or representative would foe appointed from each. A list of names of residents who would board refugees and the number they could accommodate was read, Mr. Finlayson indicating his willingness to take nine. Mr. H. Boagly and Mr. FullerSandys placed their houses entirely at the disposal of the billeting officer, Mr. L.. W. Austin (town clerk). Messrs. Glenny and Finlayson were appointed transport and commissariat officers respectively. The following ladies were appointed collectors for , the fund: —Mesdames Boyle, McDonald, Haddow, Richards, Naisraith and Hunger and Misses Lavery and Gibson. It was resolved that the sum collected be spent on relief of refugees in Patea.

The question of using either the Foresters’ Hall oi- the council chambers to receive the refugees on arrival from Palmerston was negatived, it being considered that the arduous and nerveracking experiences . that many must have undergone made it imperative that no function be arranged. The town clerk’s office, Press office and Wainwright’s drapery store are receiving depots for parcels of clothing, etc. The arrangements made to. transport

by car 100 refugees from Palmerston North were later negatived by the announcement that the refugees would arrive in Patea by train on Tuesday next. Many householders had made complete arrangements to take their guests yesterday.
