Wellington, February 6.-—ln order that" passengers might not be unnecessarily alarmed, Captain Kershaw, of the Mataroa, which arrived yesterday afternoon from' Southampton, withheld knowledge of the earthquake until the vessel arrived in port.

Wellington, Feb. 6.—-The executive committee of the Alunicipal Association has decided, in view of the ; present ■national calamity, to defer the holding of the municipal conference till 1932. The conference was to have been held at Rotorua next month.

Wilford, in acknowledging the gift, says it had been decided not to make an appeal, but it was realised that it would •be ungracious to refuse* any voluntary offer of assistance. Christchurch, Feb. 6.—The City Council increased its donation to the relief fund from £lOOO to £lO,OOO, at an urgently summoned meeting this rnorning. A sum of £5OOO is available immediately and the balance as required. The money will be provided from the electricity reserve funds. Councillors Andrews and Sullivan, M.P., are leaving to-night for Hawke's Bay. ■ Stratford, Last Night.—A grant of £5O to the earthquake relief fund was made by the' Stratford Borough Council at a special meeting to-night. The Mayor, Air. P. Thomson, said the Prime Alinister had appealed to local Bodies for firiancial assistance. If necessary, lie thought the council might be able to raise a further sum.

Mr. V. Duff, secretary of the Taranaki Automobile Association lias received advice from the secretary of the Wellington Association stating that the Alayor of. Hastings has asked: that circulars be issued advising tourists not to visit the earthquake stricken areas.

Wellington, Last Night. —The secretary of tho General Post Office stated at *2 p.m. to-day that telegraph communication was being maintained to Napier and Hastings but the. traffic continued to be very heavy and difficult to cope with. Aeroplanes were still being used to convey telegrams between Auckland and Hastings and Napier and between the two latter places and Wellington. The postmaster at Wairoa reported at 11.57 a.m. that earth tremor® still continued with diminishing intensity. There was no change in the position. The chairinan of the' Opunake school committee' at a meeting mentioned that Eltham had inquired if the committee intended to hold a picnic similar to that of last year.'On his motion,'instead of holding a picnic this year each child will be asked to donate to the Hawke’s Bay relief fund a sum equal to what the picnic woitld have cost.
