STRATFORD RELIEF WORK

ROMEO AND SEXTON STREETS. PROPOSAL UNDER SCHEME 5. Arrangements under the No. 5 scheme for the provision of work for unemployed were . set in train at a special meeting of the Stratford Borough Council, last night. “Through this scheme,” said the Mayor, Mr. P. .Thomson, “the Unemployment Board has made available to local bodies £150,000 and every local body is able to draw on that amount according to the number of unemployed for which it has to provide.” . The board would provide money but local bodies would have to supply material, transport and cartage. Work would commence on Monday and the men would be found by the unemployment committee. The council agreed to the scheme. ■ r • Mr. S. A. ‘Ward as chairman of the works committee recommended the cleaning of Romeo Street from Broadway to Hamlet Street and Seyton between Ariel and Cordelia Streets. This work, he said, could be gone on with in the meantime and the position could be reviewed at the next meeting of the council. ■ The present proposals had been recommended purely to take instant a vantage of the scheme. The recommendation was adopted. AMATEUR CLUB’S CARNIVAL. SUCCESSFUL EVENING SPORTS. ELTHAM TALKIE ATTRACTION. “UNDER THE GREENWOOD TREE.” ‘Under the Greenwood Tree,” showing at Eltham to-night, is a magnificent adaption of Thomas Hardy’s world famed novel —a story full of charm and the idyllic beauty of rural England. The speech is English and it is one of the most refreshing, entertaining talking picture programmes offered. It stars two' young Britons, Marguerite Allen and John Batten, in a picturesque comedy drama of old Wessex. The story concerns the Mellstock village instrumental choir, whose reign as leading musical lights in the village is threatened by the invention of the organ. A beautiful romance against rustic surroundings is supplied by the youthful leader of the band and the pretty schoolmistress who volunteers to play the organ.
