REFUGEES ACCOMMODATED
NONE FOR NEW PLYMOUTH i OTHER ARRANGEMENTS MADE. PRIME MINISTER SENDS THANKS Although many offers to accommodate refugees from the stricken earthquake area were made in New Plymouth it seems that help from North Taranaki in this manner will not be needed.
“The Government greatly appreciates your generous offer qf accommodation for people desiring to leave Napier and Hastings,” telegraphed the Prime. ■Minister (Mr. G. W. Forbes) to the Mayor of New Plymouth (Mr. H. V. ,S. Griffiths) yesterday. “It is understood, however, that practically all those A'ishjng to leave the afflicted area have left. But should it be necessary to take advantage of New Plymouth’s offer I shall be glad to communicate with you immediately.”
It is understood that the above message was the outcome olf a conference at Wellington between the Prime Minister and the Hons. R. Masters and E. A. Ransdm, the last two of whom have returned from a visit to the affected area. The meeting of North Taranaki ladies to elect six representatives on the Citizen’s Committee will now be held in the council chambers on Tuesday next at 3 p.m. This meeting has been postponed from the date originally fixed owing to the fact that accommodation for reftigees is not required at present, and to give ladies time to organise support from the institutions they represent. The Mayor hag been advised that financial support from the town of New Plymouth is very much desired, and the donation of as much money as possible is what is most urgently needed.
