HOUSING FOR REFUGEES.

ORGANISATION OF PUBLIC.

A meeting called by the Alayor, Air. J. AV. Winfield, was held at Inglewood on Thursday to discuss the organisation of relief schemes -for. the east coast. All branches of the community were well represented. The Alayor Pr Nap C ier, stated the Mayor, had to be evacuated within two days and the main- purpose of the meeting was to provide homes for the homeless. An urgent wire was sent, to the Alayoi of Palmerston asking if food was. required and if it was it was decided to tell the school children to let thenparents ■ know so that food could Ibc collected and sent by the Friday morning’s express. It was decided to send a telegram to the Prime Alhiister stating that the public of Inglewood deplored the calamity and would be willing to assist as much as possible. It was thought that Inglewood could accomrho<la,t& 100 instead of 50 as pieviOUSIy /‘suggested, and telegrams were sent to the Minister of- Health, the Alayoi- of Palmerston and Air. It was agreed that circulars be printed immediately appealing, to the householders for’ accommodation and that these circulars be sent out to all by means of the dairy factories, schools and post. A committee comprising tho Mayor and Mayoress, Alessrs. A. Corkill •(chairman of Inglewood County Council), R. J. Frewin (chairman of the Chamber of Commerce), I. Crossman (Inglewood Fire Brigade), ministers of all denominations, F. Cameron, C. Afullaney, J. Baxter and Alesdames Evans (Plunket Society), Alarsh (W.D.F.U.)', Alackinder (AV.'C.T.U.), and Burgess (Women’s Institute) with- power to add to their numbers was formed-.

At a meeting of the committee Mr. J. W. Winfield was elected '•chairman and the Rev. Thompson secretary. It was decided to add all members ot the county council to the committee so that each riding would be represented; also that all members of the committee be a housing committee to take names of people willing to accommodate, and that these be forwarded to the secretary. As it was thought that the refugees would be arriving probably within the next two days it was decided to have another meeting of the committee as soon as possible to see what response had been made.
