EVERYBODY’S.

“THE SQUEALER” FINALLY.

Every underworld leader has a soft spot in his heart, police records and the history of crime have established. Usually it is a sweetheart or a pal. To all others, the gang-leader may be as hard as steel and a relentless taskmaster, .meting out swift and drastic punishment without a quaver. “The Squealer,” the Columbia all-talking screen drama of the underworld, finally showing at Everybody’s, New Plymouth, to-night, portrays a novel aspect of this tradition of gang-land. Jack Holt, as a bootleg king, deals death with a lavish hand, but is almost childlike in his love for his youngster, played by little Davey Lee. He also is infatuated by his beautiful wife, played by Dorothy Revier. It is through thin soft link in his armour that he comes to grief. There is a varied supporting programme. -TO-MORROAVS CHANGE. “Balaclava,” the .'British Dominion all-talking production heading the new bill at'Everybody’s commencing a monster matinee to-morrow at 2 p.m. and at the evening session at 8, is a brilliant motion picture achievement and one that heaps mor? credit upon British producers. The Charge of the Light Britrade, which is the climax of the picture, is magnificently reproduced, but is by no means the only effective or outstanding geene. A court-martial on an officer accused wrongly of murdering a fellow officer; “The Thin Red Line” of Highlanders repulsing a massed Russian Cavalry attack, and prepared to fight where they stand; and a fight to the death between an English and Russian officer, are among the episodes of a sterling picture. Cyril MacLaglen as the virile type of hero, with Benita Hume as the charming heroine, provide the respective male and female leads. Alf. Goddard supplies the rich humour. 7 THE REGENT. MATINEE TO-DAY 2 P.M. “Under a Texas Moon,” Warner Bros.’ all-talking Technicolour production starriiio- Frank Fay, will conclude its local season at The" Regent, New Plymouth, to-day at a matinee at 2 p.m. and to-night at 8. “Under a Texas Moon” is a °fast 'moving tale of a gay Caballero who lied his way into women’s hearts and laughed his way out of dan* ger. Raquel Torres, Myrna Loy, Noah. Beery and Mona Maris all play prominent roles. “Under a Texas Moon - ’ is preceded by a number of talkie short subjects. COMMENCING TO-MORROW. Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer will present “The Lady of Scandal,” all-talking adaptation of Frederick Lonsdale’s wellknown. stage success, “The High Road,” to-morrow at the Regent Theatre, commencino- at 2 and 8 p.m. Retention of the English flavour of the drama, which was first presented in London a few seasons back, was assured by the selection of a cast predominantly British, all of the male members being born in Great Britain, while Ruth Chatterton, who has the featured role, is the wife of an Englishman, namely, Ralph Forbes, who is also in the cast. The remaining members are Basil Rathbone, Nance O’Neill, MacKenzie AVard, Fred Kerr, Herbert Bunston, Effie Ellsler, Moon Carroll, Edgar Norton, Cyril Chadwick and Robert Bolder. The story is of the smart English drawing-room type centreing about an actress who through unexpected circumstances becomes, engaged to the son of a British peer. Parental opposition resolves itself into strategy and she is asked to remain in the home of the aristocratic family in order that she may accustom herself to the ways of society. Instead society accustoms itself to her. OPERA HOUSE. TO-MORROW (SATURDAY) NIGHT. Paramount’s big special production, “The Legion of the Condemned,” js booked for screening at the New Plymouth. daring exploits were the talk of the war. ‘Nothing was too hazardous as an undertaking. Into this group of men who welcomed death comes Gary Cooper as the young American newspaperman, betrayed by his sweetheart. The high spot shows Cooper forced to carry-his ex-sweetheart across the German lines as a spy.. Fay Wray, as the spysweetheart, and Cooper head the
