ORCHESTRAL SOCIETY AFFAIRS. ANNUAL MEETING AT HAWERA. The annual meeting of the Hawera Orchestral Society was held on Wednesday night, Mr. J. M. Townsend presiding. A total of £22 14s 9d had been collected from active members, stated the report. The number of honorary members was about the same as in 1929, but it was necessary that more should be enrolled. It whs regrettable that outstanding subscriptions totalled £27 6s, though most of these could be collected Both concerts had been successful and the popularity of the society was evident from the fact that £l6 was realised, an increase over the previous year. However, in spite of increased membership takings, expenses had risen in greater proportion. While Mr. Fox was in England he had purchased a set of tympani at a low price, though after duty and charges had been paid the ultimate cost was about £5O. It was hoped to reduce expenses during ■the coming year and though the country’s financial position was not good at present it was considered that the society could command as good support as formerly. Officers were elected as follows:— Patron, Mr. E. A. Pacey; president, Mr. J. M, Townsend; eight vice-presidents; conductor, Mr. H. C. A. Fox; deputy conductor, Mrs. J. D. Quin; orchestral leader, Mr. F. J. Moloney; accompanists, Miss D. Sims; treasurer, Mrs. King; secretary, Mr. H. E. Robinson; honorary auditor, Mr. T. R. McKenzie; committee, Misses Rogers and Dolan Messrs. F. C. Foden, H. N. Lester and W. Snowsill; librarian, Miss R. Hawkins; roll steward, Mrs. Simpson. The president reported that as a result of the orchestral society helping the Methodist choir in the production of the “Creation,” a donation of £5 5s had been received from the choir. A letter of appreciation is to be sent to the choir. Mr.' Fox urged that all members should endeavour to get more members. Last year a choral society had been suggested, but it. was as far off as ever. He thought that the orchestral society should put on choral items. He proposed that as an extra concert this year, the society should produce Mendelsohn’s “Hymn of Praise?’ in conjunction with a chorus. He had spoken to about 50 singers, who were willing to assist. It was resolved to carry out Mr. Fox’s proposal. . Rehearsals are to commence next Tuesday. Votes of thanks and appreciation for services rendered, were passed to Miss Blake (for booking at theatre), Mr. Townsend (president), Mr. McKenzie (auditor) aid Mr. H. E. Robinson (secretary).'
