ASSISTANCE FOR FARMERS

A bitter attack upon the Government for its failure to provide assistance and necessitous legislation for farmers was made in the Assembly to-day by the Leader of the Opposition, Mr. 1. Bavin. He urged the immediate repeal of the legislation resorting to a, 44-hour week and other measures designed to assist the city worker as against the farmer. Mr. Bavin suggested that the Loan Council be approached for financial assistance to tide farmers over the difficult period and further promised supI port for a sales tax on flour whicn would provide £BOO,OOO a year. The Premier, Mr. J. T. Lang, declared Mr. Bavin’s Government was responsible for the present state of affairs. The difficulties would be removed in the brighter days to com under the Labour Government. ASSISTANCE FOR WHEAT MEN. CANBERRA CONFERENCE’S Rec. 5.5 p.m. Canberra, Feb. 8. A plan for the assistance of wheat farmers has been evolved by the conference between Mr. J.' H. Scullin, Prime Minister, Mr. E. G. Theodore, treasurer, and Sir Robert Gibson, chairman of the Commonwealth Bank. The details have not been announced. s
